Director of MJ. Mortimer Ltd.

“The work I do within the arts and entertainment industry is one that I hold dear to my heart, It is with my passion, ambition and hard work that strives me to be the professional I am today. My unique eye for perfection from props through to set along with my different outlook on how to approach and overcome the tasks at hand while having the experience and ability to bring out the best in others

work approaches. For me the industry inspires me to keep pushing for the highest quality of work while being able to bring together the people I work with and the audiences that watch the performance or attends the event.

Within my work as a Stage, Event & Production Manager I also have an extensive background in the Technical aspects of Theatre & Events while doing videography, photography and being the Media Director for an agency, all of these things have allowed me to have a greater understanding of how all the cogs fit together. Many of my clients enjoy working with me simply because I believe in them, they're visions and their work ethos', while they also enjoy my unique approach to my management style and people skills as they are of a high functional strategic approach. I want to immerse myself in what the industry has to offer, so that I can expand my experience and continue to learn more practical skills in the ever changing world of the industry but continue to offer my clients the best approaches to any show, event or project."

Well it’s an end of a bittersweet era…

For a while I’ve been discontent and disconnected with the Arts Industry, so as of today I have made a few big & quite frankly bold decisions in my life and my career.

I am stepping away from the Arts Industry altogether and leaving behind a place I know and used to love to find a new direction for me. I am in desperate need for a work-life balance ! 😬

I am stepping into a completely new job with transferable skills from stage management and stepping into a Corporate job as a Cover Receptionist for some of the biggest London City buildings that includes meeting & greeting clients, guests and those whom occupy the large businesses. For me it’s a step in the right direction, I need a level of stability with restricted hours and decent pay which theatre unfortunately isn’t offering that at this time. I am fighting to survive in a suffering industry and for once I want to live without a fight or taking every hour of my life to achieve something that doesn’t even get recognition. I truly hope I’ll be back at some point in the industry some day but right now this is my goodbye to the industry I’ve worked in for over 7 years.

On this topic, I have also made the executive decision to step down from working with Pride in London after 7 years, the direction just isn’t for me anymore but I am so thankful to everyone whom has guided, helped and aided me in all things Pride in London as well as my career.

Thank you to every single person for the opportunities I’ve been given, I’ve truly reached some massive highs and bottomless lows within my career in the arts sector and I’m so glad I crammed so much into a short few years, I feel like I’ve achieved so much in my life & career to date & for that I’m incredibly humble & thankful. I’ll never forget the friends & family like people I’ve met along the way. You are all incredible & I’m so thankful to you all for your support in a job I love. But it’s time for a change of direction.

Stage & Events Manager Matt - Over & Out for the final time.

Well folks - Here goes nothing. My last two show day & get out for a while. Team Singin in the rain - thank you for the experience, I cannot say it’s been an easy one but it’s definitely been a rollercoaster ride with plenty of highs and lows.

I’m honoured to have worked and met all the lovely & kind people I’ve crossed paths with on this tour. The show is truly magical because of the people within it and this show has taught me that actually my words mean something and reminded me that my health, whether mental or physical should always come above a job & when I need to take a step back in order to take steps forward and being burnt out in our industry is an even higher possibility than most other industries. It wasn’t an easy decision at all because it was in fact a necessary one that I had to make for my own health and my own safety. I have never been one to stand down from a challenge, but even I am reminded that I’m only human and it’s okay to not finish a challenge when it becomes too great.

Thank you to all whom have cheered me on, supported me and sent lovely messages and said such kind things over the past few weeks. I appreciate you & I thank you dearly.

To the rest of the Happy Rain Team - I salute you and I wish you all the luck in the world for the rest of the tour. Look after yourselves & I truly hope our paths cross again in the future! 🤞

As one journey concludes, another one begins - And who knows where it will lead me this time. 🤔

All the best,

Matt x

I’m absolutely in awe right now. We completed the impossible…We managed as a company to put on Singin’ in the Rain in Japan, which is currently a closed country to all 194 countries in the entire world and get granted special permissions from the top level of the Japanese government to bring this show to this truly amazing country and its people. We have all been so fortunate to get through shows in both Tokyo and Osaka, without a single covid case or cancellation (Miracle in itself!✨). We have managed to break many records.

So much thanks goes to the incredible UK Team and an even bigger thanks to the Japan team who have all made this impossible situation, become a reality from many a bento box, many a delivery and many a vending machine drink.

We faced many a hurdle with an entire month isolating / bubbling. We managed to all put on 22 incredible performances with such a talented, unique and truly wonderful company - many goosebumps and tears along the way from both the uk team as well as the Japanese producers and Japanese people for being so honoured for us to be here. Being able to bring the “ハッピー・レイン” (“Happy Rain”) after so long has truly been mesmerising - the support, love, standing ovations & kind words have been overwhelming to see and read - show after show! 🤯❤️

While times have been difficult on the old mental health and missing loved ones, every sacrifice we made to make this happen, has been one that will stick with me for the foreseeable future and I will remember just how lucky and honoured I am to be around such wonderful & supportive people day after day.

I have learned and covered 4 different plots in just as many weeks from Sound 2, SR ASM, Crew 2 and Crew 4, all while learning a whole new video system I hadn’t worked with yet. I’m truly blessed and honoured to work with some of the best in musical theatre, and I most definitely mean both on and off it! 🙌 Thank you to everyone I’ve learned from so far and giving me guidance, support & patience where I needed it, I am truly grateful! 🥰

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” - Henry Ford 👌

Well ‘Robin Hood Pantomime’ 2021 - 2022 in Theatre Royal Nottingham as Technical Assistant Stage Manager, you’ve been the greatest pleasure of my pantomime career - working with such lovely people all round! Thank you to everyone who has been incredible from start to finish - Honestly you couldn’t have more of a wonderful bunch of people under one roof.

We leaped over some pretty massive hurdles in the past few weeks here in pantoland but none of those hurdles stopped us with all 49 shows happening on stage! I don’t know how we got there without a single closure but we smashed it and the entire company are over the moon! 💪❤️🎭

37,000 people watched the show and loved it just as much as we did doing it every day.

Fun facts:
- 441 scene changes completed.
- 343 dame quick changes.
- 1,078 technical/backstage plots completed.
- 2,068 covid tests from everyone over the run.
- 3,479 band cues in the run.
- 11,711 cues called by in the run.

“Matt off comms for the last time” - Over & Out! 🥺🎭

Mental health in so many people right now is at an even higher risk than usual due to self isolations around the UK, job risks and many other things.

If you are struggling with your mental health there are many charities whom can help you 24/7, one of them is , call them on 116 123 or email them: [email protected]

If you work in the theatre industry you can reach out to The Theatre Helpline 24/7 (https://theatrehelpline.org) on 08009154617 or find out more information of theatre specific charities that can help during these difficult times: https://theatresupport.info

Or if you don’t want to contact any of the charities then please message or call me anytime. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you are struggling. We have to look after each other more now than ever before. Don’t suffer in silence. I’ve lost enough friends and colleagues to this virus and to Su***de, I don’t want to loose another who was afraid to reach out for help.

Well after an intense couple of weeks, we opened ‘Robin Hood’ Pantomime in Nottingham (ironic right 😜) a little over 2 weeks ago.

We have a first class set of artists, an incredible set and props (if me & Caitlin say so ourselves 👌) and the dream team of a stage management/ technical team & in-house stage crew team.

As you can tell from being bedazzled by the cast, we are all having the best of times so far and we are only 16 performances down, with many more to go. Let’s smash pantoland season. 🥰❤️🎉🎭✨
