In a fascinating study, researchers discovered that highly skilled multidisciplinary candidates often face a valuation penalty in academic accreditation processes. They argue that this penalty is not only due to confusion about their profiles or concerns about their skills but also because they threaten established social boundaries. Evaluators, acting as gatekeepers for their profession, may penalize candidates they believe could disrupt their discipline's distinctiveness and knowledge domain.

The study found that high-performing multidisciplinary candidates suffered the most in small, distinctive academic disciplines and when accreditors were highly typical members of their field. This highlights the need for academia and businesses to recognize and embrace generalists, especially in the era of generative AI models like ChatGPT. As these technologies continue to advance, the value of interdisciplinary thinking and adaptability will only increase, making it essential to break down these barriers and promote collaboration between specialists and generalists alike.
