A historical record can be the beginning of a family story.

From the Natal indenture records, TamizhConnect has identified 70,394 Tamil-origin records and mapped recorded origins to 9,175 historical villages.

Families are already helping verify these connections. From one village alone, 145 family connections have been confirmed.

Could a record be connected to your family?

You do not need to know your full history to begin.

Search with any clue you have:
• A name
• A village
• A ship name
• An approximate year
• An indenture or immigration number

Every result is a starting point for family verification and further research.

🎥 Honoured to have spoken at Dr Kumar Mahabir's Indo-Caribbean Thought Leaders' Forum — "How Girmitiya (Indentured) Descendants Can Find Their Ancestral Families."

At TamizhConnect, our mission is simple and non-commercial: to reconnect the Tamil and Indian indenture diaspora with the villages their families came from. Between the 1830s and 1920s, over a million Indians left under indenture — and most of their descendants have lost the one thread that ties them home: the name of their ancestral village. We're helping families find it again.

Opinion = "எனக்குத் தோணுது..." ✅

Statement = "இதுதான் உண்மை." ❌

Your family’s journey may have started in a Tamil Nadu village more than a century ago. 🌍
Thousands of Tamil indentured labourers left India for South Africa, carrying with them their names, languages, traditions and memories of home.
Today, some of those old records still contain clues — an ancestor’s name, father’s name, ship, indenture number or native village.
TamizhConnect is bringing those clues together to help descendants trace the journey back.
🇿🇦 South African Tamil descendants: search the historical Natal records and look for your ancestors.
🇮🇳 Tamil Nadu families: if one of the recorded villages is yours, you may be able to help reconnect a family separated for generations.
Search. Verify. Reconnect.
