Last week, Caroline Gorski took to the stage with The Economist for a very special event.

The event was hosted by Minds of All Kinds (MOAK), the 100% volunteer-led affinity group at The Economist Group, during Neurodiversity Celebration Week.

MOAK exists to create an environment where people feel genuinely comfortable talking about mental well-being and navigating the cyclical pressures of working life. It's a remarkable community, and they brought in exactly the right speaker.

With 30 years advising NATO, UNESCO and the House of Lords on emerging technology, Caroline could have delivered a masterclass in AI governance. Instead, she did something braver.

She talked about what it actually feels like to be a different kind of thinker in rooms that weren't built for you. About how the qualities so many of us have been told to dial down, the pattern-spotting, the parallel processing, the relentless connecting of ideas across unusual domains, are precisely the qualities the AI industry needs more of, not less.

She talked about building spaces where people don't have to fit in. About how an "unconventional" background in History and Literature became the foundation of a career shaping international AI policy.

And about why authentic leadership isn't one polished version of yourself, it's about creating the conditions where showing up fully doesn't feel like a risk.

For an audience navigating both professional pressure and personal well-being, the message landed somewhere deeper than strategy. The humans building this technology matter as much as the technology itself.

Last week Dr Chelsea Jarvie and Sharona Hutton travelled to Liverpool to deliver the closing keynote at the UCISA Leadership Conference.

40 minutes on stage. Years of expertise behind every word.

Chelsea challenged the audience to rethink the "it's not if, but when" mindset around cyber attacks, and made the case for a smarter approach: real resilience built from everyday decisions across an organisation, not just the tools you buy. Ownership, clarity on risk, psychological safety, and making better use of what you already have.

After Sharona spent time with Chelsea last week, she summed it up perfectly — what an audience sees is the keynote. They don't see the years of expertise that made those 40 minutes possible.

Plus the preparation, the research, the briefing calls, the travel, the full day of work that still needs doing when you get home. The mental load of showing up as the expert in the room, again and again. This is all part of the complete speaker package
