The decision process is fraught with risk. Although a particular decision may seem intuitively right, psychological bias or insufficient data can render the decision ineffective and cause serious damage to the organisation. At the very least, decisions that entail irrational risk can result in commercial disaster, as recent events in the financial sector have shown. Termination is a challenging experience for executives.

Executives who have lost their jobs face numerous challenges:

(1) Overcome the psychological effect of termination. Losing your job can be traumatic.

(2) Analyse what happened and learn from your experience.

(3) Find yourself. Termination is often an opportunity for a life review.

(4) Develop a new career strategy - be very clear about the industry, organisation, function and job level you are aiming for. This requires a lot of thought and research.

(5) Formulate a self-marketing strategy to target prospective employers. This task also needs a lot of research.

(6) Prepare high quality self-marketing materials.

(7) Extend your network, aggressively. Most job opportunities come from people you are remotely connected to through others, not your close connections.

The most promising job opportunities come from the unadvertised market so it's essential to connect with people who can help you pe*****te this market.

(8)Prepare for interviews and presentations. It's best to anticipate the questions you may be asked and develop a clear response. Rehearse interviews and presentations. However well your interview goes, it's important to debrief so you learn from the experience.

(9) Overcome disappointment if you are rejected. It can take many applications before you will receive a job offer.

(10) Once you have accepted a job offer, it's important to plan for your onboarding. This entails learning as much as you can about your new role and the potential challenges you face.

Getting over termination and finding a new job is a full-time challenge. It can take many months for a senior executive to find a new appointment.
