There’s No Self-Sponsorship Visa — Just a Structure That Has to Hold Up
There’s no “self-sponsorship visa.” What exists is a Skilled Worker structure — set up a genuine UK company, get it a sponsor licence, and it sponsors you for a real role inside the business. UKVI doesn’t take the arrangement at face value: trading presence, the vacancy itself, sponsor systems, and ongoing compliance all get tested.

The general salary threshold sits at £41,700 a year (or the going rate, whichever is higher) since 22 July 2025 — and a business built primarily to secure a visa won’t clear the bar.

Sponsor Management System: Mandatory MFA Rollout Begins 3 September 2026

Your SMS login is about to look different — and if your account details are out of date, that’s a problem you’ll find out about at the worst possible moment.
UK Visas and Immigration published SMS Manual 13 on 28 August 2026, confirming a phased rollout of mandatory multi-factor authentication across every Worker and Temporary Worker sponsor licence. It starts today, 3 September, with each sponsor assigned their own activation date. From that point, logging in means a one-time passcode on top of your usual username and password. New sponsor licences get MFA automatically from 9 September. Student sponsors follow in early November.
Two changes sit alongside it that are easy to miss: Level 2 user roles are being phased out — no new ones can be added once MFA is live on your licence — and inactive SMS accounts are being removed.
The single biggest risk here isn’t the extra login step. It’s an Authorising Officer or Level 1 User whose date of birth, mobile number or email on file is wrong, discovering that the day they need to assign a CoS.

It Protects You. It Won’t Get You ILR.

For ILR, the requirements don’t change: a sponsored job, continuity throughout the 5-year period, and salary at or above the going rate, tested at the date you apply. Self-employment and voluntary work under SW 18.3 don’t produce any of that evidence.
The move after leaving an exploitative sponsor: get into a new sponsored role as soon as you can, and don’t wait until year five to find out your timeline doesn’t add up.

Scotland Wants Its Own Visa System — Here’s What’s on the Table
Scotland is asking Westminster for something the rest of the UK doesn’t have — its own visa routes.
Three are on the table: a Scottish Visa, a Rural Visa, and a Scottish Graduate Visa. The reasoning is straightforward — the population’s ageing, some areas are actually shrinking, and the current system makes it harder to get the right people into the jobs that need filling.
