We often talk about HR needing to be more strategic.

But that can feel quite hard when the day is full of employee issues, urgent hiring challenges, leadership fall-outs and a hundred things that need dealing with right now.

That’s the tension, really.

The operational work is immediate, visible and difficult to ignore. The strategic work is quieter. It takes longer. And it’s all too easy to push it back for another day.

The risk is that HR ends up being seen as the team that fixes problems in the moment, rather than the team that helps stop the same issues showing up again and again.

But maybe operational work and strategic work aren’t as separate as they sometimes seem. Very often, the day-to-day issues are pointing to something bigger.

A grievance may be telling us something.
A spike in attrition may be telling us something.
The same leadership tensions showing up in different parts of the business are almost certainly telling us something.

If we only deal with each issue in isolation, we solve the problem in front of us.

If we step back and look at the pattern, we start to see what might really need attention.

Maybe being more strategic in HR isn’t always about finding huge amounts of thinking time.

Maybe it’s about looking differently at the work already in front of us — and asking better questions about what it’s telling us.

This is exactly the kind of challenge we explore in our virtual HRBP Programme — helping HR professionals build the confidence and judgement to move from reacting to issues to spotting the patterns underneath them.

How do you balance the operational and the strategic in your role?

Low turnover can be a strength — but it can also create hidden career challenges.

When people stay in an organisation for a long time, progression can slow, skills can stop evolving, and internal mobility can become harder to make happen.

In this episode, Lucy Adams is joined by Eva Murciano from the European Central Bank to explore how organisations can rethink career growth, make movement more normal, and help people build future-ready careers.

What happens to careers when people stay in organisations for a long time?

Low turnover can sound like a good thing, but it can also create real challenges: limited progression, fewer fresh opportunities, and skills that don’t always keep pace with change.

In this episode, Lucy Adams and Eva Murciano explore why internal mobility is still so hard to make happen, why career growth needs to be about more than climbing the ladder, and how managers can support more honest, useful career conversations.

A practical conversation for anyone thinking about growth, mobility and the future of careers.

Job hugging is often talked about as if it is a motivational problem, as if people have simply become less engaged.

But that misses what is really going on.

For many employees, staying put is not about comfort. It is about risk. When living costs are high and the job market feels unpredictable, sticking with the known can feel safer than making a move.

And it is not just about changing employer. More people are also deciding not to push for promotion if the next step looks like longer hours, less flexibility and more stress.

In this podcast, we explore job hugging as one of the key HR trends shaping 2026 and what it tells us about how people are thinking about work, progress and security.

AI is reshaping work faster than most HR systems can keep up.
We’re moving from fixed roles to fluid tasks and skills and that means traditional approaches to workforce planning are starting to fall short.

The challenge is not just about technology. It’s about work design.

What should be automated?

Where do people need to be reskilled?

Where does human judgement, creativity and emotional intelligence add the most value?

If HR sees AI as an IT rollout, it becomes someone else’s agenda.

If HR sees AI as a work design issue, it becomes central to one of the biggest conversations organisations need to have right now.

In this podcast, we explore why workforce planning needs to move beyond job titles and focus instead on tasks, skills and workflows.
