Join Bhutan Beyond Boundaries for an online session with Tashi Choden, Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Royal Government of Bhutan, as we explore Bhutan’s long-term development plan and national priorities.

This session is an opportunity to:
• Understand where Bhutan is headed and what the country is prioritising for the years ahead.
• Learn about the areas of development that are likely to shape Bhutan’s future.
• Consider how these priorities may create opportunities for skills, careers, businesses, and meaningful contributions.
• Reflect on how knowing Bhutan’s direction can help us (whether at home or abroad) make better-informed choices and plan our own futures.

For Bhutanese living abroad, understanding these plans can also help us think about where our knowledge, experience, and aspirations might fit into Bhutan’s future development.

A Slice of Bhutan in the Heart of London 🇧🇹🌳

On 25th July, the Bhutanese community in the UK came together in Hyde Park for our annual picnic, plates full of home-cooked favourites, laughter in the summer air, and the quiet comfort of familiar faces.

Wherever we go, we carry Bhutan with us. And when we gather, we bring it a little closer to each other too.

🐝 Our first regional scoping session is done and what a start!

Last week on Saturday, Bhutanese and friends of Bhutan currently residing in Australia, Canada, France, England, Italy, and beyond came together for a conversation that's been a long time coming.

The context was clear: as more Bhutanese move abroad, the 21st century economic roadmap has recognized us as a key stakeholder in Bhutan's future. Yet knowledge-sharing among non-resident Bhutanese remains something we haven't quite built until now.

Participants shared what already exists in their regions - welfare groups, career networks, professional associations and one thing came through again and again: we don't want to duplicate what's already there. We want to fill the gaps between them.

That's the idea behind KIN Hive, a platform built on three pillars:

🟡Empower — through Knowledge (mentoring, research collaboration, career growth)
🔵 Support — through Information (the right information, at the right time, for navigation and transition)
🔴 Connect — through Network (linking Bhutanese professionals, associations, and friends of Bhutan across the globe)

This is just the start of a bigger journey, one to make life abroad a little smoother for fellow Bhutanese, strengthen ties with friends of Bhutan, and channel knowledge and skills back home.

For our very first event, we're exploring Identity, Belonging, and Transition with Bhutanese speakers from across different regions and countries. How do we hold onto who we are while building new lives abroad and how do we find community across the distance?

Special Highlight: A dedicated discussion on "Bhuchung Amai Chey Chey," the song by Pema Jamtsho, with lyrics and composition by Kinley Tshering, that captures the quiet hardwork and sacrifice of Bhutanese living far from home. Hear directly from those behind the song, both speakers at this event.

In line with the session's theme, our speakers will also explore ways to support one another in professional development and knowledge exchange which is the core aim of the network.

Expanding the Frontiers of Knowledge

Last week, our member, Dawa presented ‘Education beyond the Factory Model’ to the Bhutan Society of the UK.

Based on Lhomon Education (LME) in Bhutan, which offers a transformative alternative by treating wisdom traditions as a scientific framework for human flourishing, Dawa presented that the current mainstream education have witnessed prioritization of material consumption, trapping students in a ‘comparison trap’ of algorithms, TikTok brain, and digital addiction.

Dawa shared LME belief in nature as a laboratory and the mind as an all-pervasive asset. He emphasised cultivating resilience, selflessness and genuine service should be metrics of education. His presentation generated deepened interest among the attendees both among the members of the Society and Bhutanese students. We look forward to taking it forward.

Bhutan Beyond Boundaries would like to thank the Bhutan Society of the UK for creating a platform for Bhutanese to interact and share Bhutan’s local and indigenous knowledge. Such interactions help build friendship and network and promote people-people relations between the countries. Bhutan Society of the UK is a British friendship society run by British friends of Bhutan some of whose members have worked in Bhutan between 1960s and 1990s.

🌍 Expanding Frontiers of Knowledge

We're incredibly proud of our member Pema Yangzom, who represented Bhutan on an international stage at the Housing Studies Association Annual Conference in Sheffield, UK.
(20th-22nd April 2026)! 🎉

Pema presented a thought-provoking paper: 'Housing as a Determinant of Development and Health Outcomes in Bhutan.' Drawing on data from four rounds of the Bhutan Living Standard Surveys (2003–2017), her research explores how housing shapes the nation's health and economic wellbeing.

🔍 Key findings:
✅ Households with higher incomes are found to have improved housing conditions and better access to clean energy and sanitation.
⚠️ Households with three or fewer rooms, flooring materials of cement, concrete and tiles and reliance on dirty energy for cooking incur higher health expenditures.
The findings underscore the urgent need for inclusive housing policies.

🏆 Pema has been awarded the prestigious Alan Holmans Award 2026 for her outstanding work at the intersection of housing, sustainability, and health. A well-deserved recognition!

Pema currently works at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Royal Government of Bhutan and her participation was supported by the Global Bursary Award.
