As we step into a new year, many professionals revisit goal-setting with renewed energy and familiar frustration.
I often hear the question: Should I focus on SMART goals or stretch goals?
The answer is: both - used intentionally.
SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) are powerful because they create clarity and momentum. They translate intention into action and make progress visible. If your resolution is about consistency, structure, or ex*****on, SMART goals are essential.
Stretch goals, on the other hand, challenge your identity. They push you beyond what feels comfortable or immediately achievable. These goals are less about precision and more about possibility; who you are becoming, not just what you are doing.
Where most New Year’s resolutions fall apart isn’t the goal itself.
It’s the lack of accountability.
Accountability turns aspiration into follow-through. When someone else is helping you reflect, recalibrate, and stay honest about your progress, goals stop being optional. They become commitments.
As you set goals this year, ask yourself:
Which goals need structure and measurement?
Which goals need courage and stretch?
And who will hold me accountable when motivation dips?
Success rarely comes from willpower alone. It comes from clarity, challenge, and accountability working together.
Here’s to setting goals that are both achievable and transformative.
If you feel you would benefit from having an accountability coach, then let's have a talk about how we can work together.
