Whatton Apiaries Professional Beekeeper of 30 years experience supplying local honey, hive products and sale of honey A truly Artisan local product.

Whatton Apiaries

Whatton Apiaries is based on the Whatton estate in North West Leicestershire with the home apiaries in the village of Long Whatton
John Heard has managed honey bee colonies for over 30 years with apiaries sited locally within Charnwood and North West Leicestershire to take full advantage of the varied flora and fauna within our locality to bring varied and interesting local hon

eys to local consumers. All of our product is extracted and bottled in a 4 star food standard facility based in the village of Long Whatton. Our honeys are simply extracted, filtered and blended with no recourse to heat based pasteurisation used in Supermarket honey which destroys the natural enzymes and yeast within the product. We keep the use of heat to a minimum to maintain the quality of our products. We do use electricity within the process but much of the power used is provided by Eco friendly solar panels. We exercise a batch control system which enables us to identify from which apiary and from which extraction every jar of honey is originated. Ours is a unique product brought from flower to jar largely within the confines of the Whatton Estate. We mainly use the “Buckfast” strain of bee originally developed by Brother Adam as his lifetime’s work over a sixty year period at Buckfast Abbey in Devon. Buckfasts are by nature a gentle bee that are entirely attuned to the vagaries of the British climate and do very well in this area. Honey is harvested twice during the beekeeping season. The first crop in June once the fields of oilseed r**e lose their flowers. This crop is very prone to crystallisation and is removed and extracted before this occurs in the comb. The second crop is taken in August as the majority of nectar bearing plants lose their flowers at the end of the Summer. Our hives are then carefully fed and medicated to prepare them for the winter, we always aim to bring 100% of our hives through the Winter and do all we can to achieve this. Hives are kept under close observation during the Winter months to ensure we bring as many colonies as possible through. We care for our bees and do all in our power to maintain their well being and survival.

We have both runny and soft set honey to choose from.

To purchase from the door is £6.50 per jar. To send a parcel we charge £10 for one jar, £17.50 for two, or £33 for 4, which includes P&P (to mainland UK).

Waste not, want not

This brace comb was removed from one of our hives yesterday, and it contained a good quantity of honey. Not wanting to throw it away, it was placed into this feeder box just outside the apiary, and today the comb is all but empty. Recycling in nature at its best!

As we approach the festive season (I daren’t say the ‘C’ word just yet...) please think about where your gifts, your food, your drink, your cards, your clothes come from. Where possible, try to avoid the big chains and franchises, and instead make a small business’ day by opting for their product or service. It could be the difference between them being here next year or not.

🐝 What can we do collectively to help save the bee?

🐝 What can you do as an individual to help save the bee?

Sometimes the simplest of actions can assist our ongoing battle to keep the bee healthy and active, which in turn helps our dying planet.

FOR SALE - INVERTBEE BEE FEED SYRUP

That time of year again - stimulatory feeding starts now to keep the queens laying into the late Summer. 5 litres per hive ahead of main feeding in September - 15 kg per hive.

Starts here - available for purchase now.

INVERTBEE BEE FEED SYRUP

Invertbee is a syrup bee feed produced primarily from sugarbeet sugar by
Belgosuc in Belgium. The syrup is inverted by using a protein enzyme which
raises the monosaccharide's to almost 50% of the product, thereby enabling
the bees to digest the syrup much more readily than simply feeding ordinary
sugar solution.

Invertbee has a density of 1.37kg/litre and is therefore a thick syrup and
MUST NOT be diluted with water as this would substantially reduce it’s
nutritional value and storage qualities. It is guaranteed to stay stable in
its original form for 12 months and does not form black mould as with
liquid sugar feed. The bees take it down rapidly as there is no inversion
process for them to complete. It can therefore be fed much later into the
autumn, a 15kg bucket per hive is the standard allowance.

It is also excellent for using as a spring stimulant simply by giving each
full colony one to two litres at a time.

Available now from Whatton Apiaries at £1.00 per kg, collected from
Long Whatton supplied into the purchaser’s own containers.
