Site: MVMS18 Trench 1 & Trench 2

The end of the private excavation along Mill Street
This has been a fascinating investigation which the results now confirm evidence of an earlier medieval settlement in this property which was part of the early origins of Ludlow...
From the pottery evidence I have now the earliest dates to 1250 -1350.

Earlier in March this year trench 1 was excavated further to the east of the site yielding pottery identified as between 1350 - 1490. The natural bedrock formation was found underneath thus an indication of why they built the medieval town wall there. Now the second trench T2 of the investigation has been closed.

What was revealed in T2 was a substantial foundation wall that was part of a medieval building...wow On the right of the trench as seen in the pictures there was evidence of a collapse with large stone rubble infilled.
As we progressed further on the left of the wall the soil appeared to be internal, but as of yet not quite confirmed as a floor cut.
Further investigation could determine this

The whole investigation and excavations have provided some fine questions to the medieval town wall (built around 1230 -1290), the river Teme and its possible river crossings, the earlier possible AS (Anglo Saxon) settlement within Dinham pre-conquest, and of course that illusive 'Christs Croft' a hidden passage cutting behind Dinham and down to the River Teme.
I think the passage could possibly be even prehistoric in origin

The archaeology that has now come to light in this trench could be starting to infringe upon an earlier fabric of Ludlow's origins...
Post ex the finds are back at the museum Lab and are awaiting further analysis...
Getting close now and next season should prove… interesting

Will keep you posted on further developments ,
Bloody exiting stuff...
