MEP are pleased to announce the start of an exciting new project for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in Kiribati. A successful inception meeting was held on Tarawa Island, Kiribati, on establishing a marine spatial plan for the island.

This project is one of three marine resources projects MEP is currently working on in Kiribati, under the World Bank funded PROP project.

We held a successful stakeholder workshop about establishing a marine spatial plan for Tarawa with the communities of North Tarawa. The project team from MFMRD were working with experts from MacAlister Elliot & Partners Ltd (Sarah Yates) and Aquarius Survey & Mapping (Neil Golding). The project is being funded by the World Bank through PROP project.

The project aims to establish a marine spatial plan for Tarawa, indicating a focus on organizing and managing marine resources and activities in the region.

The Omani British Business Council is delighted to announce the publication of the third issue of our Quarterly E-Bulletin. This edition is titled 'Oceans, Sustainability and Heritage: Oman’s Blue Economy'. Oman has a deep-routed association with the ocean. The marine environment with its beautiful coastline is one of Oman's most important economic, social and environmental assets.

This bulletin focuses on how Oman's blue economy can contribute to achieving Vision 2040, from the diversification of Oman's seas, the heritage of fisheries in the region, to empowering the youth through the influence of sailing.

We would like to thank all our contributing writers for their outstanding work: MacAlister Elliott & Partners (MEP), Oman Sail and Dr Will Le Quesne, Cefas.

UK Fisheries Audit

MEP have recently provided the eNGO Oceana with the UK Fisheries Audit. The audit provides an evidence-based snapshot of the status of UK fish stocks and the UK fishing sector’s recent exploitation history of those stocks, by the time the UK leaves the EU fisheries policies. In doing so, the report provides a baseline for future evaluations of the UK’s progress and/or setbacks in sustainable fisheries management.

Of the 104 UK stocks audited by MEP, 35.6% were healthy in terms of stock size relative to the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) reference point Btrigger, whereas 20.2% were in a critical condition. Data limitations mean the status of the remaining 44.2% could not be determined.

Like Oceana, MEP hopes the content and policy recommendations of the UK Fisheries Audit will contribute to UK policy-making and support UK progress towards fully sustainable fisheries.
