**How much thought do you give to the slot between your jib and mainsail?**

It is one of the most talked about, misunderstood, and influential areas of sail trim. Get it right and the boat feels balanced, responsive, and easy to drive. Get it wrong and you can find yourself fighting excessive heel, heavy helm, poor pointing, and inconsistent performance.

At Sanders Sails, we are frequently asked how a jib and mainsail should work together. Sailors often focus on the shape of each sail individually, but the real magic happens in the space between them. The interaction between the two sails governs airflow through the heart of the sail plan and can have a dramatic impact on both speed and handling.

This is exactly why we created our **How To Resources** section; a growing library of in-house articles designed to help sailors get the very best from their sails, whether they are racing around the cans, cruising the coast, or preparing for an offshore passage.

Our latest article, "How to Set the Slot Between Your Jib and Mainsail", explores:

✔️ Why the slot is so important
✔️ How jib and mainsail twist should work together
✔️ The signs that your slot is too open or too closed
✔️ How to improve balance, pointing, and boat speed
✔️ Common mistakes that even experienced sailors make

Every article is written by our sailmakers and sail experts, drawing upon decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and refining sails for some of the world's most demanding sailors and sailing programmes.

Because great sails are only part of the equation. Knowing how to use them is what unlocks their full potential.

Head over to our **How To Resources** page and discover how small adjustments can make a remarkable difference on the water.

🏆 A Clean Sweep at Cowes Classics Regatta 2026 🏆

Last weekend saw the conclusion of the Cowes Classics Regatta 2026; the first major championship of the season for the XOD fleet and a fantastic showcase of one of the most competitive one-design classes on the Solent.

After an off-season focused heavily on sail development, it was incredibly rewarding to see our latest designs performing at the very highest level.

From the all-round versatility of the XJS1 to the championship-winning performance of the XJC3 and the choppy sea state capability of the XJC6, the event highlighted the strength and depth of the current Sanders Sails XOD wardrobe.

Competitors were treated to a real variety of conditions. Strong wind-against-tide races produced steep, demanding seas that tested both crews and equipment, while lighter periods rewarded those able to switch into high-VMG modes and keep the boats moving efficiently. The windward-leeward format delivered close racing throughout the fleet and provided the perfect ‘proving ground’ for our latest sail designs.

We were delighted to see Sanders Sails-powered boats fill the top five positions overall, with the podium occupied by:

🥇 X117 – X-Ray
🥈 X178 - Beatrix
🥉 X58 - Madeleine

To have boats using a range of our sail designs occupying every one of the top five positions is a tremendous result and a reflection of the countless hours spent designing, testing and refining sails specifically for Solent conditions.

A huge congratulations to the team aboard 'X-Ray' for securing the championship title and to all of our customers who continue to place their trust in Sanders Sails.

With Cowes Classics complete, attention now turns to the remainder of the season and, of course, Cowes Week. There is still time to order your new sails, but availability becomes increasingly limited as the season progresses. If you're looking to gain an edge before the next major event, now is the time to get in touch.

Championship-winning sails. Proven across the Solent. Since 1975.

💥Paul is sailing for a GREAT cause 💥

This month is 'Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month', and Paul is currently taking on a challenge to complete a solo circumnavigation of Great Britain & Ireland, raising funds for Alzheimer's Research UK

Back in the Spring, Paul asked Sanders to make a custom-designed sprayhood and cockpit enclosure for his Beneteau Oceanis 321 - a perfect addition to have on board to help him brave the weather conditions on this epic trip.

According to 'Vessel Finder', he is currently at the top of Scotland - hopefully tucked up, dodging the weather. Well done Paul!

The team at Sanders wish Paul all the very best with his continued trip.

🎉'Myrtle' 96 years young!

There is something special about a boat which was launched in 1930 and over the years has changed many hands and been many things. 'Myrtle', an X-One Design, is now lovingly owned by Cordelia & Richard, and you will spot her on the racing circuit here on the Solent.

🏆Chris chatted with them about their successful 2025 racing season, where 'Myrtle' delivered an outstanding performance at Cowes Classics Week, winning five of the seven races in a commanding display and securing the overall victory in the highly competitive X-One Design Fleet.

With her pristine white hull, Sanders Sails, Cordelia at the helm and Richard crewing, we are confident that 'Myrtle' will be one to watch in 2026!

Head over to our 'Meet the Sailors' page to read the full article and how their relationship with Sanders has grown over the years:

🙂Thank you very much to Cordelia & Richard for joining our 'Meet the Sailors' page and for taking the time to chat to Chris about life racing this special boat.

💛A Golden Oldie 💛

We recently received these old photos taken onboard a 'Baroque', a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter, taken during a gale in the North Atlantic - many years ago.

'Baroque' was owned by the legendary explorer and sailor Bill Tilman, who asked Peter Sanders' father to make him a Trysail for his next long-distance voyage.

What is special about this photo? 🔽

Peter Sanders mentioned to us in the Sail Loft that his job - when he was around 16 years old - was to hand-stitch the reef diamonds onto this actual sail!

Looking back at photos like this, it is just Incredible to see how far we have come today with sail making, technological advancements and all the latest sail design software. But one thing is still the same - hand stitching and that attention to detail remains strong here in the sail loft.

📸 Thank you Mike for emailing these over. A trip down memory lane!

🌍 World Sailing Day 🌎

Today, May 28th, marks the 1st World Sailing Day! A great opportunity to celebrate our sailing heritage, our fantastic maritime industry, all the Clubs, Charities and Associations which work hard to enable so many people to get out on the water sailing.

We feel very lucky as sailmakers to be able to play a part in this incredible world of sailing.

📷 A massive thank you goes to Sailing Pinnacle for sharing this photo - which for us just sums up ‘World Sailing Day’. Sanders Sails in the Pacific - stunning!

🚀 Stylish, Slinky and Super Competitive....🚀

That is Jetpack, the JPK 10.10, who has been a firm winning favourite on the Solent racing scene for quite a while now.

A BIG thank you to Mark Brown, the Owner & Skipper of this power machine, who took the time to chat with Chris about his love of racing, developing his perfect sail wardrobe and his amazing crew.

As quoted by Mark:

"The picture of all 10 cups from 2025 is a good motivator; the team lives for racing and got themselves a taste for drinking out of silverware at the end of the season. But we know each year we must push harder as there will be a target on our backs and you know there are some great crews who are eager to beat us!"

🍾Who doesn't like the taste of drinking champagne out of silver!

Thank you Mark 🙂
