The importance of dead wood is a subject I feel strongly about. Too many people put all the blame on farmers, government etc.. for the demise of insect life in their areas. This article goes a long way to highlight the importance of dead wood and will hopefully inspire many of those that read it to leave dead wood piles and standing dead trees in their gardens. Obvious a large dead tree is dangerous but the trunks can be stabilised easily once the limbs have been removed.
If I could request anything from people managing land, it would be to leave standing and fallen dead wood alone for the wildlife, and to garden owners, please place a log or two around the garden to gradually rot down. You will soon find more bird species entering your gardens and may even be lucky enough to get Woodpeckers nesting in an old tree trunk if you have one.
