Networking is difficult and scary...

not for everyone but a lot of people don't find it natural to make friends with everyone in the room. So how can you get comfortable being uncomfortable with networking and how can you get the most from it?

One particular skill is joining a group of people who are already talking to each other. They look like they already know each other well and you'd be intruding if you introduced yourself.

Sometimes that impression will be true. Most of the times it's not though. If you feel uncomfortable interrupting, call it.

Find a gap in the circle, move into it and say this:

"Apologies, you probably all knew each other before tonight, do you mind if I join you?"

One of two things will happen:
- either they will say "yes, we've known each other for years" and you can ask them how they first met
- OR they'll admit that they are strangers and you can make a joke about huddling together in numbers for protection from the circling lions.

Either way, well done, you just networked with strangers.
