World Environment Day always brings a wave of "we're committed to sustainability" posts that don't say very much. So here's what we actually do.

We design and install solar PV, battery storage and heat pump systems across commercial, healthcare and education projects. We're MCS accredited, which matters if you're a client trying to access funding or wanting the work signed off properly.

If you're looking at solar, battery storage, heat pumps or a wider retrofit for a building you own or manage, we'd be glad to walk you through what's realistic and what's worth doing first.

The team completed the Three Peaks Challenge with 10 minutes to spare!

There was a bit of traffic between the mountains, a few injuries picked up along the way, and some serious terrain to contend with, but none of it dampened the spirit. Three mountains, 24 hours, all completed safely, and every single one of them should be incredibly proud 🙌

It was a brilliant achievement and a great cause. Thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported the team throughout. All funds raised go to Heart of Kent Hospice, a charity close to the business, and your generosity made a real difference.

A huge well done to everyone who took part: Nick Nowotny, Michael Greer, Robert Dewar, Lee Fincham, Steve Golding, Stephen Bishop, Paul Parker, Thomas Hickey and Sean France.

We’re keen to do another challenge, any ideas?

There’s a common assumption that adding more equipment automatically improves system performance. In reality, it often introduces complexity that’s harder to manage.

Additional plant, controls, or layers of technology can increase maintenance demands, create points of failure, and make systems harder for operators to understand. Over time, that complexity can work against efficiency rather than supporting it.

Well-performing M&E systems are usually the result of clear intent, appropriate sizing, and good coordination, not volume. Simpler systems, when properly designed, are often more resilient, easier to maintain, and better suited to long-term operation.

Performance comes from design clarity, not how much equipment is installed.
If system performance is suffering despite added complexity, we can help assess whether simpler solutions would be more effective.

Heart of Kent Hospice supports more than 2,000 people and their families across our community every single year, and they need £7.6 million to do it. That is not a small number, and it is not a number they can meet without the support of people and businesses around them.

That is why we are taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge tomorrow. Three peaks, three countries, 24 hours. It is a challenge that will test the team physically and it is one they are doing entirely voluntarily, which says a great deal about the people we have around us.

If you have followed Volmech for any length of time, you will know that the team is the business. We do not take lightly the opportunity to do something meaningful together, and this felt like the right one to get behind.

The JustGiving page is still live and any support is genuinely appreciated. Please share if you are not able to donate directly, because getting the word out is just as valuable.

We're making good progress at Police Section House, the listed structure being brought back into use by the University of Kent. Providing a high degree of comfort within a listed structure always brings its own set of challenges which is why this building has been so highly specified.

Working alongside Baxall, the team has handled it the way they always do, working through the design and installing the containment systems as sympathetically as possible to the building's historic structure.

Next on the list, appointing contractors for data networks and CCTV so we can keep momentum through the next phase.

If you have a heritage or live building project coming up and you're trying to plan the M&E side properly, get in touch with our team at [email protected].

Before recommending any system upgrade, the first step is understanding what’s actually happening on site.

Is the issue driven by increased demand, changes in building use, or operational challenges? Are systems underperforming due to design limitations, maintenance issues, or controls that no longer reflect how the building operates?

Upgrades shouldn’t be automatic responses to problems. In many cases, performance can be improved through better control strategies, adjustments to operation, or targeted interventions rather than full replacement.

The right solution only becomes clear once the right questions have been asked. That process is what ensures upgrades are necessary, proportionate, and effective over the long term.

Before investing in upgrades, our team can help identify whether changes are necessary, and what will deliver the best long-term outcome.

Many of our projects start the same way, with a recommendation or a returning client.

That trust has been built over years of consistent delivery across healthcare, education, and commercial sectors. Clients know they can rely on our teams to work safely, communicate clearly, and deliver systems that perform as intended.

From planned maintenance to full mechanical and electrical packages, we focus on long-term partnerships rather than one-off jobs.

It’s a simple approach, backed by experience and accountability.

We are looking for electrical apprentices to join the team at Volmech.

If you want to learn the trade properly, working on real projects across London and the South East, we want to hear from you. We work across electrical, mechanical, fire and security, and renewables, so there is plenty to learn and plenty of room to grow.

If you know someone who would be a great fit, feel free to share this or point them our way.

This month's Employee of the Month is Ashley Andrews. 🏆

Ashley joined us part time and made enough of an impression that he went full time. As a plumbing improver, he has continued to grow within the team and is exactly the kind of person we are glad to have on board.

Well done Ashley. It is well deserved.

Works complete at Hawkhurst, our team has successfully delivered the external lighting installation.

Good external lighting is one of those things that's rarely noticed when it's right, but immediately felt when it isn't. Our team delivered the installation with the same attention to coordination and quality we bring to every site, working around live operations throughout.

Another project delivered to the standard our clients rely on.
