Last chance to see this exhibition at Folkestone Museum 👏🏻

It's your last week to see our special exhibition, Raising the Dead: Life and Loss in the Kingdom of Kent. Catch your final view of the sword before it goes for a much-deserved rest!

‘Raising the Dead’ explores one community who lived and died in the Folkestone area during the Early Medieval period. The exhibition opens on Saturday July 4th and closes on Saturday October 24th. Admission is free.

Featuring finds seen on Digging for Britain in 2025 and 2026, ‘Raising the Dead’ displays the grave goods of four people who died in the fifth and sixth centuries. It includes a spectacular sixth century ‘ring sword’ with a silver-gilt hilt. The sword even revealed a new secret while we prepared it for display.

Kent was its own kingdom until the ninth century. Its culture was distinct from the rest of Anglo-Saxon England. These people’s remains, and the objects buried with them, help us tell their community’s story. They show us what they valued, how they mourned, and their links to the wider world.

Please note that this exhibition includes images of human remains.

Raising the Dead is produced in conjunction with the Parish Meeting, the University of Lancashire, Isle Heritage CIC and AMTEC CIC.

Very lucky to visit the ongoing dig at Shorne Woods Country Park last week ❤️🌳. The careful excavation of the later 18th to early 19th century continues...in this 📸 you are looking out of the kiln with the and in the foreground and ongoing efforts to understand the area in front of the stokeholes beyond. Work continues on site weekly while the weather holds, with investigations planned in 2027 to understand the wider site 👏🏻👍🏻

Huge thanks to everyone who visited our stands at the 👏🏻❤️. We had displays covering our current excavation at Shorne Woods Country Park and our work with the amazing Whose Hoo Scheme 🎉. The Royal Engineers Museum is an incredible venue for an event and so great to talk to other groups, including Newington History Group City of Rochester Society Eastgate House, Rochester and the Kent Defence Research Group 👏🏻👍🏻 📸 Emma.

For our first in a while..a humble GREIG (David Greig grocers) meat or fish paste jar! Found recently at Shorne Woods Country Park this little jar was perhaps lost by the clayworkers, or RAF personnel or post World War Two families living in our camps? 👏🏻❤️🌳👍🏻
