Fun stuff about UK-GDPR (yes, really!) There was such a hoo-ha around GDPR when it came into effect, it triggered a whole raft of memes. Do you remember the Privacy Policy being shown as the Star Wars opening crawl? And accusing Santa's 'naughty or nice list' as being in violation? /My personal favourite was when a former Shipping Forecast announcer recorded snippets of the regulations - sent me right off to sleep and worked a treat!

Obviously, many of the big tech companies, especially the social media platforms, fell foul - as soon as GDPR was introduced, many of them, including Facebook, were sued because they were forcing their users to give up more of their data than necessary - presumably to sell to 3rd parties so we could all be marketed more aggressively to. One of the biggest chuckles I had, though, was back in March 2019: a provider of compliance software found many websites operated by EU member state governments contained embedded tracking from ad technology providers. Now that's what I call an 'own goal'!

UK-GDPR - I can practically hear your eyes rolling! Trouble is, we all need to pay attention to it. Now, if you get right into the nitty-gritty, it can all get very complicated very fast.

It doesn't have to be a regular date - I'm not the jealous type! I appreciate you may not need a regular collection of paper for shredding, and that's absolutely fine.

We offer an ad-hoc secure shredding service to large offices, small offices and even home offices and residential customers. All paper is collected and securely shredded in line with BS-EN-15713 standards (that's a European Standard that gives businesses a framework to manage and control the destruction of any confidential material destruction they hold, ensuring that it is disposed of securely and safely).

We'll collect from you - it doesn't matter if the documents are still in boxes or whether they're in bags, and you don't have to worry about paperclips or staples - the monster muncher can take care of those! If you have IT equipment for destruction, place them separately, and we'll shred those too. And if you prefer, we can even arrange for an on-site shredder vehicle - so you can watch the whole process.

Are you the data controller for your business or the business you work for? UK-GDPR clearly specifies each controller is responsible for proving their compliance with regulations and providing the mandatory documentation. Can you do that? Can you confirm you have erased or destroyed someone's records?

UK-GDPR imposes two levels of sanctions for those found to be in breach:

1) Financial sanctions of up to £17.5 million or 4% of annual turnover for failure to comply with any of the data protection principles, any rights an individual may have under Part 3 or in relation to any transfers of data to third countries.

2) If there is an infringement of other provisions, such as administrative requirements of the legislation, the standard maximum amount will apply, which is £8.7 million or 2% of the total annual worldwide turnover in the preceding financial year, whichever is higher.

There is, of course, the negative media attention - which will cost untold amounts in lost current and potential business.
