Electric vehicles made up half of the models with the lowest first-time MOT pass rates in 2025, raising questions about the long-term durability of EVs as more three-year lease vehicles enter the aftermarket. While EVs now account for more than 20% of new car registrations, industry experts suggest the higher failure rates are less about the powertrain itself and more about wear-and-tear on tyres, suspension components, and braking systems.

Research from the Institute of the Motor Industry found EVs are 40% more likely to fail MOTs due to tyre-related issues, largely because of their greater weight and instant torque delivery.

However, the picture is far from straightforward. Data indicates EVs actually achieve higher overall MOT pass rates than equivalent petrol and diesel vehicles, with fewer advisories and minor defects. Industry specialists point to owner maintenance habits, tyre care, and brake usage as key factors rather than inherent vehicle reliability concerns.

As EV adoption continues to grow, the findings highlight both emerging opportunities for the aftermarket and the ongoing need to educate drivers that, while EVs may require less servicing, they are not maintenance-free.

Once limited by modest range and cult appeal, electric cars are now mainstream, accounting for two in five (40.9%) of available models. In 2016, battery electric cars were still a niche proposition, with just 14 models available. In 2026, you can choose from more than 167 BEV models, a 12-fold increase.

That choice spans every vehicle segment, from compact runarounds and SUVs to luxury saloons. Britain’s famed supercar makers are also joining the shift, led by hybrid innovation with plans for fully electric in the future.

This expansion has been driven by manufacturers’ long-term investment, with 51 brands in the UK offering battery electric models, up from 12 a decade ago, highlighting the billions industry has committed to decarbonisation.

Meanwhile, average electric driving range now exceeds 300 miles, surpassing typical weekly mileage (around 127 miles for most UK drivers).

A new European research initiative called ECOLABEL is challenging the way tyres are currently tested and labelled, arguing that today’s standards are based on outdated assumptions that no longer reflect real-world driving conditions, especially in the EV era.

Researchers from Gdańsk University of Technology say current tests use unrealistically smooth road surfaces and fixed temperatures, which can significantly distort measurements for tyre noise and rolling resistance.

The project aims to create more accurate and representative testing methods that could improve EV range predictions, fuel efficiency data, and consumer transparency while pushing tyre manufacturers toward better real-world performance.

Changes are still years away, but it’s a strong reminder that as vehicles evolve, the standards used to measure them need to evolve too.

Freedom of Information requests by the BBC found that only 24% of pothole claims submitted between April 2020 and March 2025 were approved. While only 147 of 207 councils responded across England, Scotland and Wales, those authorities still received more than 146,000 claims and paid out around £13.5m.

At the start of this year, the RAC reported that pothole claims had nearly doubled in three years, increasing by 91% from 27,731 in 2021 to 53,015 in 2024.

Head of policy at the RAC, Simon Williams, said: “The massive three-year rise in pothole compensation claims made by drivers shows what a huge task it is returning the roads to a respectable standard.”

The Asphalt Industry Alliance estimates that repairing roads across England and Wales would require more than £18.6bn in one-off funding.

As advanced driver assistance systems become standard across the automotive industry, Europe’s leading safety body, Euro NCAP, is warning that many drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated with overly intrusive technology. Constant warning chimes, aggressive lane-keeping systems, and distracting alerts have led some motorists to switch the features off entirely, raising concerns about whether today’s safety tech is actually improving the driving experience.

Now, Euro NCAP is preparing a major overhaul of how ADAS systems are tested and evaluated. Future safety ratings will focus more heavily on real-world usability, smarter driver monitoring, and systems that adapt to individual driving behaviour rather than constantly interrupting it. The organisation is also pushing manufacturers to develop more intuitive technology that intervenes only when genuinely needed.

The changes could have a major impact on how vehicle manufacturers design future vehicles, particularly as semi-autonomous systems.

The UK’s accident repair sector is facing a growing skills crisis that could have major consequences for insurers, fleets, and motorists alike. New research from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) shows the sector is losing around 4,700 workers annually while attracting only 3,000 new entrants, creating a widening shortfall of skilled technicians.

Specialist areas such as paint and glazing are under the greatest pressure, with employers struggling to recruit talent as repair complexity increases alongside EV and ADAS adoption. The IMI warns that without urgent action to improve recruitment, training alignment, and workforce retention, insurers can expect longer repair times, rising indemnity costs, and increasing customer dissatisfaction across the motor claims journey.
