Freedom of Information requests by the BBC found that only 24% of pothole claims submitted between April 2020 and March 2025 were approved. While only 147 of 207 councils responded across England, Scotland and Wales, those authorities still received more than 146,000 claims and paid out around ยฃ13.5m.

At the start of this year, the RAC reported that pothole claims had nearly doubled in three years, increasing by 91% from 27,731 in 2021 to 53,015 in 2024.

Head of policy at the RAC, Simon Williams, said: โ€œThe massive three-year rise in pothole compensation claims made by drivers shows what a huge task it is returning the roads to a respectable standard.โ€

The Asphalt Industry Alliance estimates that repairing roads across England and Wales would require more than ยฃ18.6bn in one-off funding.

As advanced driver assistance systems become standard across the automotive industry, Europeโ€™s leading safety body, Euro NCAP, is warning that many drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated with overly intrusive technology. For years, OEMs have looked for ways to generate revenue after the initial vehicle sale, and connected vehicles are now making that possible.

For the aftermarket, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Independent workshops and accessory suppliers may find some traditional revenue streams under pressure, but connected platforms could also create demand for new, or faster, services, servicing, integrated accessories and data-led maintenance propositions.

Renaultโ€™s next-generation electric vans are being developed as โ€œsoftware-defined vehiclesโ€, while Ford is already using connected vehicle data and predictive modelling to identify faults before breakdowns happen, claiming fleets can reduce downtime by up to 50%.
