"We'll catch up when we're quieter."

That gets said a lot in July. Then September arrives all at once and the quiet month never turns up.

The inbox refills, the diary fills, the quotes promised back before the summer all land in the same week. Somewhere underneath that sits a sales ledger nobody has properly looked at since June.

September is a good month to stop leaving it. If chasing keeps sliding down the list, that's the part we take over.

Everyone has a September list.

New targets. Tidying up the books. Getting back into a proper routine after a summer of half-weeks. And usually, somewhere near the bottom in smaller handwriting, finally chasing that overdue list.

The chasing is normally the one that gets carried into October.

Tell us what's actually top of your list this month. If it's the overdue one, we might have a shortcut for you.

Ask ten business owners why an invoice hasn't been chased yet, and I'll get ten different, very honest answers.

Rarely is it about the money itself. More often it's not wanting to be the one who brings it up, especially with a customer you like and have worked with for years. Sometimes it really is just time, or the invoice got buried under everything else that week.

None of those reasons are unusual. They're just easier to admit once someone else says them first.

What's yours? Comment below, or call if you'd rather just talk it through.

We hear these on repeat, often from business owners who are brilliant at what they do everywhere else.

None of them are really about the invoices themselves. A bookkeeper keeps the numbers accurate, but chasing payment is a different job entirely. Payment terms set an expectation, they don't collect anything on their own. And running out of time is rarely about being lazy, it's usually that credit control keeps losing out to whatever's most urgent that day.

Most of the time it comes down to the same thing: everyone assumes someone else has it covered, until it turns out nobody actually does.

If a couple of these sound like you, that's usually where we start.

"We'll catch up when we're quieter." We'd guess a fair few businesses say that exact thing every August.

Quieter has a habit of not turning up. There's always something more pressing than a follow-up email, and a few skipped weeks turn into a proper backlog before anyone notices.

By the time September comes round, what would have been a quick reminder turns into a longer, more awkward conversation. Nobody's done anything wrong, time's just moved on.

Handing the follow-ups over to someone else means they still happen, whether things are busy or not.

I have a version of this conversation with someone new every August. Everyone's turning their attention to summer plans, and invoices end up lower down the list.

Chances are your customers are having the same conversation on their end. If you're not chasing, there's a decent chance they're not planning to pay just yet either.

A few minutes before you switch off saves a much bigger pile waiting for you in September. Give us a call if you'd rather it wasn't sitting on your desk.

One thing I've realised over the years is that most business owners do not struggle with credit control because they do not care. They struggle because they are busy.

You have every intention of chasing those outstanding invoices on a Friday afternoon, but then another priority takes over. Tomorrow becomes next week, and next week becomes next month.

The reality is that good intentions do not get you paid. Consistency does.

I have written a new blog about exactly this. It covers why relying on good intentions usually leaves your business waiting for cash, and the simple habits you can build to stay on top of your credit control week after week.

Most agency invoices don't get refused. They get queried. "What's this line item?" "Wasn't that in scope?"

That's where a chasing-only service stops working. They didn't raise the invoice, so the question comes back to you, three weeks later, on a Friday.

We work end to end. Invoicing, queries and credit control as one job, so a query gets resolved by the person who raised the invoice, usually the same day. You hear about it once it's sorted.

Not softer emails. Fewer handoffs. Save this if an invoice has ever stalled over a question nobody answered.

Thank you Vanessa at Main Weddings & Events for taking the time. Taking a vast job off your hands and dealing with it properly is exactly the point.
