Marlbank Vineyard

Marlbank Vineyard Growing outstanding grapes in an area of outstanding natural beauty! Our vineyard is steeped in history, with roots in growing quality fruit.

I’m Jeremy, the steward of Marlbank Vineyard, located just east of the Malvern Hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, growing pinot noir grapes to create our vintage Sparkling Banc de Noirs. Originally home to thriving apple and pear orchards, rich marl soils are similar to that in Burgundy's top vineyards. Today, we blend this agricultural heritage with our ambition to produce limited-ed

ition English sparkling white wines, crafted in partnership with the talented team at Three Choirs Winery. At Marlbank, we embrace a philosophy of thoughtful and regenerative viticulture. We prioritise quality-driven practices that reflect our dedication to cultivating the finest Pinot Noir grapes. Each harvest season, local hands come together to pick our grapes, celebrating our collective effort and commitment to land stewardship. At Marlbank, we create a welcoming environment for all, whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or new to the world of viticulture. Join me on this journey of discovery, community, and connection. I invite you to follow our story, visit our vineyard, and celebrate the fruits of our labour together. Here’s to the beauty of the Malvern Hills, the joy of sharing fine wine, and the friendships we cultivate along the way!

*Technical focus for July: Leaf stripping*

Leaf stripping is a vineyard management practice through which leaves around the grape clusters are removed to improve sunlight pe*******on and air circulation. This helps ripen the grapes, reduces the risk of diseases, and improves overall grape quality.

It also means we get a better view of the grapes growing!

🚧 Tour prep is underway at Marlbank Vineyard! ✨

We’re making the final touches before we welcome you for tours – signs are going up on Marlbank Road and at the end of the drive, and we’re especially excited to be replacing the bridge over the stream that leads to the vineyard.

Naturally… we’re now thinking about what to name the bridge! A current favourite: “Le pont d’un vigneron” (The w**emaker’s bridge) – but we’d love your ideas too!

We've had this fence in place since we began here five years ago, and it is now starting to rot. We've made the most of the opportunity to plant a hedge which will be a biodiversity haven, and also provide shelter for our vines. We've planted six different native species, and we're looking forward to watching it flourish!

Precision pruning in progress ✨

Debs and friend Julian are hard at work in the vineyard, carefully deciding where to cut back the old growth. It’s a delicate balance, with so much to consider: the vigour of the root system, the number of buds we leave on the cane for the 2025 harvest, and the spurs we’ll rely on for 2026.

And always front of mind? Quality over quantity starts here. 🍇✨

What does pruning really involve? Here’s a closer look:

1️⃣ Removing old growth: Last year’s canes are carefully trimmed to focus the plant’s energy on new shoots.
2️⃣ Identifying the canes for this year’s grapes and photosynthesis, and prepare spurs for next years’ canes
3️⃣Shaping the vine: Pruning gives the vine a structure that allows for optimal sunlight, airflow, and ease of harvesting.

Every cut is made with purpose, setting the stage for a successful growing season.

Why February is pruning season:

February is a good time to prune. Hopefully the really cold weather will be over, and we can get on with the job before the sap starts flowing again in the vines. We will be careful to keep the canes for next season left vertical so we avoid the impact of any late frost.

By removing last year’s growth, we:
🍇 Encourage the vine to produce the right amount of bunches we want to make flavourful grapes.
👉Structure the vine to allow airflow and sunlight
👏Have the right number of buds to get optimal photosynthesis

We will be back soon with some images of our pruning!🥂

Debs and I recently went to a pruning workshop down at the Aldwick Estate, near Bristol, to sharpen our skills. It is so important to do the right thing in , and we had some great guys from Vinescapes to help. It’s not just about cutting off dead wood; it’s about setting up the plant to produce the right amount of grapes to get the optimum yield.

During the workshop, we:

🍇 Learnt some new techniques for pruning.
👉Discussed the balance between green harvesting and proper pruning
🤝 Talked about frost management techniques.

Workshops like these are really helpful to get out and meet other vineyard owners, and see how they wrestle with the key points in the growing season.

🌟 We're excited for pruning to start and will be putting these new skills into action in Marlbank!

Crafted entirely from red grapes, Blanc de Noirs sparkling w**es are known for their bold, full-bodied character. They’re the perfect partner for heartier dishes that can match their depth and richness.

Here are some incredible pairing ideas to elevate your next meal:
🍣 Smoked salmon: The savoury, smoky flavours of salmon are a delightful match for the robust notes of Blanc de Noirs.
🥩 Steak: Pair your glass with a juicy Ribeye or New York Strip steak for a truly luxurious combination.
🍖 Lamb: Indulge in a rack of lamb or lamb chops to experience how beautifully the Ch*****ne complements rich, savoury flavours.
🍫 Dark chocolate: End on a sweet note! The slight bitterness of dark chocolate truffles or bars is divine alongside Blanc de Noirs.

Pairing w**e with food is an art—one that’s both fun and delicious to explore. 💫

🌾 Pruning and frost protection at Marlbank

Pruning is essential to growing top-quality grapes. During frost risk, we leave the canes upright so the buds stay above the frost zone. Once the danger has passed, we carefully tie them down to the fruiting wire. Timing is everything when it comes to protecting our future harvest! 🍇

At Marlbank Vineyard, we light braziers at the bottom of our rows during frost risk. These small fires do more than provide warmth—they create airflow, drawing frost down the slope and away from our precious vines. ❄️

🌬️ Keeping frost at bay at Marlbank Vineyard ❄️

Frost during bud burst is a grower’s worst nightmare! At Marlbank, we prepare with careful planning:

✅ Airflow: Short grass between rows ensures frost flows down to the stream.
✅ Braziers: Lighting fires at the end of rows helps draw frost down the slope.
✅ Pruning timing: Buds stay safe as canes are tied down only after frost danger passes.

Nature is unpredictable, but with these methods, we protect our vines and secure the harvest. 🍇

The most exciting part of the last few weeks before harvest is monitoring the sugar levels in the grapes. Using a refractometer, I measure the level of sugar in our grapes. We are looking for our grapes to reach around 80 Oeschle, which is a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity to transform them into our vintage sparkling white w**e. 🍾

We are lucky to have close to 50 bird species visiting us here at the property. However, some of our feathered friends, like starlings, pigeons, and pheasants, can make harvest time challenging. 🦅

I have set up scarecrows to keep these feathered friends away from our grapes. It is all part of protecting the hard work we have put into this year’s harvest.

I always make it a priority to regularly check the vineyard for any signs of disease to protect our precious Pinot Noir vines, especially during harvest season. It is important to spot any signs of disease, particularly botrytis (also known as grey mould), as this can spread quickly if not addressed. 🍇

Community is at the heart of what we do.

This harvest, we had twenty members of the Marlbank community volunteer their time and energy to be part of the team that picked our Pinot Noir grapes, which will become our vintage Blanc de Noirs, ready to drink in 2026. 🍾

Their presence reminds us of the shared love for this land and the fruits it yields.

Since February, when I pruned each vine, I have tended to them with care to ensure they thrive. In these final weeks before the harvest, I have been on the lookout for spotted wing drosophila, which can affect our grapes and the quality of our sparkling white w**e. I have installed traps throughout the vineyard to monitor for any early signs of these fruit flies. 🍇

Hello! I am Jeremy, the steward of Marlbank Vineyard, where my passions for agriculture, viticulture, and rugby converge.
For over 35 years, I have been working in agricultural supplies and agronomy in three continents, including time spent in French vineyards. Today, I am delighted to run our vineyard, where the fertile marl soils of the Malvern Hills allow us to grow exceptional Pinot Noir grapes. 🍇

Our vineyard is more than just a place to grow grapes; it’s a place where people come together to share their love for fine w**e and for the beauty of Malvern Hills. 🌄

Each bottle of our Blanc de Noirs sparkling white w**e carries a unique connection to my rugby history. As the proud recipient of the 1,181st retrospective international cap awarded by Scottish Rugby, this number holds a special meaning for me. Today, in honour of that legacy, we release exactly 1,181 bottles each year, capturing the same spirit of commitment and passion that defines both my journey in rugby and in viticulture.

I invite you to join us on this journey of passion, community, and exceptional w**e! Find out more: https://www.marlbankvineyard.com

As the steward of Marlbank Vineyard, I am excited to share our journey and philosophy with you. At Marlbank, our Pinot Noir vines symbolise a new chapter in a longstanding tradition of cultivating quality fruit. For generations, the fertile marl soils at the foot of the Malvern Hills have nurtured award-winning apples and pears. Now, it is the turn of our grapes to carry this legacy forward. 🍇

Every vine is meticulously tended by hand from pruning to harvest, ensuring that we cultivate the best possible grapes. These grapes are then transformed into our exquisite Blanc de Noirs sparkling white w**e by the talented hands at Three Choirs Vineyards. ✨

I'm really pleased to be part of this community, where land stewardship and vineyard craftsmanship come together to create something truly special. Join us in celebrating the beauty of the Malvern Hills, which we call home. 🏡
