What's eating up your day?

Most insurance Ops Leaders tell ne they don’t need more hours, they just need stronger leadership below them.

Because, the issue usually isn’t that there aren’t enough hours in the day. Although it can feel like it - I have those days too

It’s that too many of those hours get eaten up by things that should have been handled before they reached you.

A people issue, a decision nobody wants to make or a situation that’s somehow done a tour of the building before landing on your desk.

That’s why stronger and more confident team leaders give senior leaders far more than “support”.

They give you:
more time
calmer operations
stronger day-to-day decisions
and less rework caused by hesitation, avoidance or passing things upwards

When your team leaders grow in confidence and ownership, you get to spend less time firefighting and more time actually leading.

Is this one of the biggest reasons you feel overloaded as a Leader?

Is it because some of your team leaders solve today’s problem, but don’t build tomorrow’s capability?

In my experience it often happens with good intention.

A team member brings a problem.
The team leader answers quickly.
The issue gets sorted.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

But the thinking stays with the leader.

Over time, that creates more dependence, more interruptions, and less confidence lower down.

A better approach is to coach in the moment.
Three useful questions team leaders can ask are:

What have you already considered?
If you were the customer what do you think the best option would be and why?
What would you do if I wasn’t here?

Those kinds of questions help your team think for themselves and not just wait for your answers.

What's the hidden cost of being the escalation point for everything?

Cramming down a snarnie at your desk and giving yourself indigestion, because you don't have time for a proper break?

Waking up 2 or 3 times a night thinking about your long to-do list?

I get it
You can be an experienced insurance leader and still spend too much of your week pulled into issues you wish you didn't have to handle.

This won't be because you’re doing anything wrong.

But because too many issues are still being pushed upwards instead of being owned lower down.

When that happens, the work you should be doing around strategy, growth and improvement gets replaced by firefighting.

I'm going to end my life

I'll never ever forget those words, spoken by a customer, early in my early insurance career, who was suicidal

He told me if I didn't pay his claim there and then, that he had no reason to live and would end it all

I'll never forget the anxiety and worry of saying the wrong thing and potentially making the situation much worse

It's calls like this that you never forget, but also never forget the support I received from my team leader

Without the post call support to ensure I was ok, I know the emotion I was feeling would have affected me for the rest of the day and potentially impacted the calls I received from other customers that day.

It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about supporting the development of team leaders; as I know the value of the impact team leaders had on my career.
