I'm going to end my life
I'll never ever forget those words, spoken by a customer, early in my early insurance career, who was suicidal
He told me if I didn't pay his claim there and then, that he had no reason to live and would end it all
I'll never forget the anxiety and worry of saying the wrong thing and potentially making the situation much worse
It's calls like this that you never forget, but also never forget the support I received from my team leader
Without the post call support to ensure I was ok, I know the emotion I was feeling would have affected me for the rest of the day and potentially impacted the calls I received from other customers that day.
It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about supporting the development of team leaders; as I know the value of the impact team leaders had on my career.
