12 years ago, Advita’s line manager declared it “National Advita Day”.

Advita hadn’t said a word about how she was feeling - but her line manager, Anna, noticed anyway.

After a tough week, one of those ones where you hold it together but hope no one asks you a question, she came out of a meeting to find notices pinned across the office. Badges and posters with “We love Advita” everywhere she looked.

It wasn’t the grand gesture that moved Advita; it was what the gesture represented.

Anna had seen Advita without having to ask for help. In that moment, she felt valued and worthy in a way that no one had ever made her feel before.

Anna didn’t wait for the annual review or monthly catch-up; she took action immediately, so it felt genuine, not performative.

Leadership doesn’t always require grand gestures, but it does require attention and the willingness to act on what you notice.

Anna gave Advita’s confidence a much-needed boost that day and allowed her to be her best self.

When did you last make someone on your team feel truly seen?

The final shot: sunshine, smiles and a smoothie…plus a copy of book :)

BTS: showing up, backing myself, quiet mindset shifts, and choosing confidence even when it doesn’t feel effortless.

At CommsRebel, we talk a lot about confidence, communication and culture - because confidence isn’t something you suddenly have. It’s something you build in the everyday moments, conversations and choices that help us thrive.

The best communicators don’t always need more information. Sometimes, they need space to think clearly.

That’s where coaching can make a real difference.

At CommsRebel, communication coaching is designed to support individuals, leaders and teams navigating complexity, visibility, change and pressure. It creates space to step back, challenge thinking, build confidence and make better decisions, without the noise.

For some people, that means strengthening strategic influence or finding the confidence to speak up more visibly. For others, it’s working through stakeholder challenges, leadership pressures or moments of self-doubt. And sometimes, it’s simply having an experienced sounding board who understands the realities of communication, culture and leadership.

Because great communication isn’t just about outputs. It’s about judgment, clarity, trust and impact.

Our coaching combines practical communication expertise with confidence, culture and leadership insight to help people communicate more effectively, without losing themselves in the process.

If you’re looking for support for yourself, your leaders or your comms team, send us a message to find out more about our coaching programmes.

Recently, Advita was asked what skills are missing in our industry right now, and she said our ability to advocate for ourselves isn’t great.

When you’ve been working in internal communications for several years, you generally know what ‘good’ should look like in terms of technical expertise.

But the biggest issue, in her opinion, is not being able to stand by our conviction and stick up for ourselves as much as our friends do in other disciplines.

So we often get treated like we’re a ‘nice’ to have function rather than a function that can play a critical role in helping build trust in a noisy, volatile, uncertain world.
So Advita’s wish for our industry is that every IC person believes in their worth and value, without thinking they are not good enough or that they should be lucky to have a ‘iob.’

We do great work, add great value and make a big difference. If we didn’t, why would so many other people, who are not qualified or experienced, want to get in on the act?!
