Mothercare had its glorious time, it was once one of the biggest children wear of the time. But now it had to shut down all the stores in the UK.
The close rate is at a record high in 2019. There are many factors behind the high shut-down rates, but the core change is consumer behaviour. Take Mothercare as an example, it had failed in connecting with its consumers. While other competitors transitioned into online and were able to offer competitive price, free delivery, convenient logistic services and all other value-adding services, Mothercare was still located in a suburb location, and paid shipment if you shop online.
Therefore, have a clear brand position, know your consumers and follow them to where they are.
"At the heart of it, those that are doing well are the ones that have a distinct proposition", says Mr Lim.
