Here’s Hazardous Harry’s 30-second way to identify what you’ve got:

Measure the thread O.D.

Check the thread pitch

Is it tapered or straight? (NPT is tapered)

Hazardous Harry’s corrosion warning ⚠️
If you’re fitting cable glands in harsh environments and still picking “whatever’s cheapest”… don’t act surprised when it comes back rusty.

Brass is spot on for most standard installs.
But if you’re dealing with:

Coastal / marine air

Food hygiene environments

Chemical exposure

Outdoor installs that get battered by weather

…then stainless steel is usually the smarter choice for longevity, reliability, and fewer call-backs.

If you’re ringing up for a cable gland and your answer to “what’s the OD?” is…“no idea mate” — you’re not the only one. But we can’t size it properly without it.

Paul the Viking’s 30-second OD check (Outer Diameter):

Measure the OUTSIDE of the cable sheath
(Not the cores. Not the armour. The outside.)

Best method, vernier calipers:
Close gently around the cable
Read it in mm
Take 2–3 readings and use the biggest (cables aren’t always perfectly round).

No calipers? Tape trick:
Wrap tape around once
Mark where it meets.

Measure the length = circumference
Use the formula on the graphic
Comment “OD” and we’ll send a quick cheat sheet so you get the right gland first time.

Stop guessing. Stop returning the wrong gland.
