September ends. FASD continues to grows up.

As FASD Awareness Month draws to a close, the message we want to leave you with is a simple one: FASD is lifelong. The children we talk about in schools and children's services become the young people navigating transition, and the adults in our health, housing, employment and justice systems. Their needs don't disappear at 18 — they change.

Thank you to everyone across Greater Manchester who has completed a webinar, attended a Q&A, shared a post or started a conversation this month. Awareness is where it starts, but pathways, diagnosis and support are what change lives.

📣Out now: two new resources to help young people understand FASD!

Finding out about FASD, or talking about it with others, can bring up lots of thoughts and questions. These new expert-reviewed leaflets are written directly for children and young people, in clear and simple language to help them to better understand FASD.

The "Why do I have FASD?” resource helps a young person think through their feelings about having FASD. It explains what FASD is, how alcohol can affect a developing baby in pregnancy, and reminds them that people with FASD have many strengths and talents.

"They think I might have FASD — what does that mean?" is for young people right at the start of that journey. It explains why the people who care about them are asking questions, and what FASD actually means.

Both leaflets are designed to be read alongside a trusted adult.

How many people in Greater Manchester could have FASD?

A Greater Manchester study found an estimated FASD prevalence of 3.6%. Applied to the area's mid-2024 population estimate, that could mean around 108,000 people across Greater Manchester.

FASD is not rare — and many people remain unidentified or do not receive the understanding and support they need.

FASD stands for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. It is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that results when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body. It can affect people in different ways, including their thinking, learning, memory, attention, emotional regulation, sensory processing, communication and daily living skills. With early recognition, appropriate adjustments and consistent support, people with FASD can and do thrive.

Five free bitesize FASD awareness webinars — free for those in Greater Manchester, and all online so you can watch whenever suits you.

Created by National FASD for the Greater Manchester FASD Network, each session is short, practical and designed to fit around a busy working week:
1. FASD and things to consider in the transition to adulthood
2. Teaching a student with FASD
3. FASD in social work
4. Discussing an FASD diagnosis
5. General health and FASD

Whether you’re a parent or carer, work in education, health, social care or another frontline service, these sessions will help you understand FASD, recognise it, and adapt the support you offer.

FASD costs UK society an estimated £9.2 billion every year — and around £400 million a year in Greater Manchester alone.

Too much of that money is spent late, in crisis, and in the wrong places — because needs aren't recognised early enough and because the UK still lacks a coordinated approach to prevention, diagnosis and support.

Investing in FASD-informed prevention, timely diagnosis and lifelong support isn't just the right thing to do — it's the cost-effective thing to do and because young people with FASD become adults with FASD, that support has to continue across the whole lifespan.

Today is International FASD Awareness Day.

It falls on the 9th day of the 9th month as a reminder that going alcohol-free for all 9 months of pregnancy is the safest choice.

FASD is a lifelong condition, but with understanding, early identification and the right support, people with FASD can and do thrive. Today is a day to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and celebrate the achievements of people with FASD and the families who support them.

Around 1,500 young people with FASD leave compulsory education in Greater Manchester every year.

Why does that matter? Because leaving school can mean leaving support behind.

Transitions are hard for anyone, but for young people with FASD they can be especially difficult. New environments, new expectations, and far less structure, all at a point when they still need consistent, brain-based support. FASD doesn't end when school does. We need much better post-16 support — in colleges, apprenticeships, employment, housing and adult services.
