Big news for Manchester’s music scene!

Today we publish a landmark report to strengthen the city’s grassroots music venues and launch the new Manchester Grassroots Venues Network.

The research - supported by Manchester City Council and carried out by The hub - highlights the pressures facing smaller venues and sets out recommendations to support Manchester’s music ecosystem.

The new Network, convened by CityCo with support from Music Venue Trust, will bring venues and partners together to share best practice, shape policy and boost collaboration across the city.

A major step forward for grassroots music in Manchester. Read more on our website 🔗 https://manchestermusiccity.com/news/venues-report-published/

A reminder that Manchester City Council's £245,000 discretionary fund to support the city’s Grassroots Music Venues is accepting applications until Friday 28th November 🫶

Following reductions to the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Business Rates Relief Scheme, this initiative is designed primarily to ease the financial pressure caused by Manchester’s grassroots music venues transitioning to the new business rates tariffs.

A direct response to one of the key recommendations within our forthcoming Music in the City report delivered by The hub ✨

Delivered in partnership with national charity Music Venue Trust who, alongside national advocacy, are urging local councils to take action, the fund represents a rapid, targeted intervention to protect the small venues that make Manchester’s music culture world-renowned.

Putting research into action 💪

Manchester Music City commissioned research from the hub to better understand the challenges facing grassroots music venues - and it’s already making a difference.

Today Manchester City Council announced a new £245K fund to support the city’s grassroots venues, responding directly to the research’s key findings around business rates, rising costs, and financial pressures threatening the sector.

The fund, to be administered by Music Venue Trust, will be supported by revenue from the city’s major live music events - ensuring that success at the top feeds sustainability at the grassroots.

Keep your eyes peeled for the full research report and further actions which will be shared in September 👀 https://manchestermusiccity.com/news/whats-the-story-grassroots-glory/

Do you have an old guitar gathering dust in the loft or garage? A broken or unused instrument that’s lost its song? Now’s the time to give it a new lease of life!

The call is now open for the people of Manchester to contribute guitars – new, old, damaged or unplayable – to be transformed into artworks which will be displayed in shop windows and venues around the city as part of Music for the Senses. All donors will be named and credited as part of the trail, so you will be able to seek out your own contribution and discover the artworks they have become.

Drop off your guitars at participating Manchester Libraries or Forsyth Music Shop, Johnny Roadhouse Music, PMT and Rigby Music.

At the end of the trail the decorated guitars will be auctioned to raise money to support grassroots music projects and venues throughout Greater Manchester via a dedicated music fund managed by Forever Manchester in collaboration with key music partners in the city. Guitars in good working condition will be donated to a music charity.
