This week I have been looking after Yamaha’s CFX concert grand for the James Mottram International Piano Competition (the Yamaha makes a trip up as an alternative to the resident RNCM Steinway). It has been great to hear both pianos put through their paces. Tonight both instruments are being played by three brilliant pianists in the final alongside the RLPO.

Fantastic to be back at Douglas Music Parbold for their first concert and the start of an exciting new season after the past 18 months of lockdown.
Tonight the London Tango quintet along with Guitarist Craig Ogden played a brilliant program of Piazzolla and other similar composers.

It is even more fantastic to see such a full and eager crowd to turn up. There was a worry that people might still be taking precautions, and not want to come out, but they came and gave us an almost full house!

And one more thing! It was great to see displayed proudly in the foyer two new MBE awards for voluntary service; one for the Parbold concert series and one for the Parbold picture house. Definitely very deserving recipients!

Post-lockdown pitch raise tuning for this beautiful, elegant Schimmel 174 today. The poor thing had gotten quite flat, and wasn’t sounding at its best. Now, with the pitch back to 440, it sings again!

First job today is to try and get rid of this nasty scratch on a Yamaha C3 lid. Built up a bit of a sweat on this frosty morning!

It’s not very often that I get called to work on unusual things like this two manual harpsichord, and the 200 year old square piano below. Usually, instruments as old as the square fill me with dread as they can be so fragile, but these were a pleasant surprise!

It appears that during lockdown lots of my customers have been playing plenty of piano. As a result, I’ve been greeted with fair few broken strings already in the past couple of weeks. Luckily, I carry all gauges of treble wire with me, and can supply bespoke bass strings to order.

Well, it’s the final tuning of 2019. It’s been a busy year. Just time to enjoy the eerily peaceful emptiness of the hall with a cup of tea and a mince pie, whilst I set the piano up for Jools Holland tonight.

Almost the end to another busy week. Just putting the finishing touches to this tuning at the Apollo theatre. I didn’t realise how big this place was from the outside!

Someone had tried to repair a couple deep scratches on this Yamaha U3. Cabinet repairs are not something I do all too often, but with a little elbow grease, and perseverance, I was able to improve it.
