What Does a Private Investigator Wear
by www.redcircleinvestigations.com
There has always been a comedic version of what a private investigator should look like. Usually a set of dark glasses, a large standout and a very suspicious looking trench coat. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The art of private investigation includes having the ability to blend in to any situation and to be able to remain in different social situations, undetected while being able to capture evidence. Here is a run down.
What do Private Investigators Wear on Surveillance Assignments?
The experienced and skilled investigator will be dressed in comfortable and boring clothes so as not to stand out. They will be dressed in the same sort of attire and clothing that everyone else in the area will be wearing.
No matter what you decide to wear on a surveillance you should always carry some additional clothes with you for various reasons. Here are just a few:
Quick change…..
There will be times when the current clothing you are wearing will not suit the situation you are in or about to go into. The well prepared investigator will always have many changes of clothes in order to be prepared for all eventualities.
Situation specific clothing
While on a task there is no guarantee where your principal will go and what they will do. It is advisable to always have changed of clothes for specific situations. Here are a few examples:
Surveillance in a Gym
Always wear clothing that you would actually wear to a gym so that you feel comfortable in and can use any part of the gym comfortably with out standing out.
Surveillance in a Restaurant or Night Club
I have personally had situations where I have had to follow a principal into an expensive bar or restaurant. These types of places often require collar and shoes so its always good to have a change of clothes like these in your surveillance platform. Ideally keeping shirts and jackets hung up.
Having Extra Clothes for Overnight Stays
Comfortable clothing for over night stays, whether having to sleep in your vehicle, a hotel or even a bush, is an essential part of your kit to ensrue you are not working the next few days in crumpled and unkempt clothing. A wash kit for hygiene is also a must.
Having Warm Clothing
There is nothing worse than being in a situation in which you are not dressed for and for two reasons. Not only will you stand out like a sore thumb if you are in shorts and t shirt in the rain, or are stood shivering on a corner in a thin top during the winter, but the effects of weather can limit your concentration and effectiveness on the job. Water proof clothing and warm clothing should be available.
What Not to Wear as a Private Investigator
Any clothing that does not fit the situation, is overly recognisable, such as clothing with large emblems and garish or colourful clothing will make you stand out and be more memorable. In the same light don’t go too far the other way and wear very dark boring clothing. Incidentally it is what I was taught on my private investigator course and when you look too boring, dark and like you are trying to be invisible e.g all grey with hats etc then you look suspicious. It can become very hard to do your job once people are suspicious of you.
Final Thoughts
Clothing plays a very important part of the job. A good investigator is prepared for all eventualities, can change quickly and easily and is comfortable in as many social situations and classes as possible. Always have a selection of clothing in a bag in your vehicle that is easily accessible and ensure that you have somewhere you can quickly change into that clothing.
