The FIFA World Cup starts on 11th June and while it’s time for employees to enjoy the action, that doesn’t mean workplace standards should slip.

With matches hosted in North America, UK fans will have to wait until late at night to watch them, which could cause a range of problems. From no-shows, lateness, hungover staff and absences, the football tournament creates many challenges for employers. So, are you match ready?

Before kick-off, minimise disruption by ensuring you have a winning game plan in place instead of tackling issues there and then. This includes redistributing the employee handbook and policies to your team, reminding them of the conduct you expect.

If you’re an Avensure client and are unsure how to manage conduct issues, flexibility and setting clear expectations during the World Cup, reach out to your advisor.

If one of your employees submitted a flexible working request tomorrow, would your process hold up to scrutiny?

Since April 2024, every employee in the UK has had the right to request flexible working from their very first day of employment.

As an employer, you must respond within 2 months, and you can’t reject a request without first consulting with the employee.

If you do need to refuse, you can only do so on one or more of these statutory grounds:

➡️ Burden of additional costs
➡️ Detrimental effect on ability to meet customer demand
➡️ Inability to reorganise work among existing staff
➡️ Inability to recruit additional staff
➡️ Detrimental impact on quality
➡️ Detrimental impact on performance
➡️ Insufficiency of work during the proposed hours
➡️ Planned structural changes

Any refusal must be confirmed in writing, with clear reasons stated.

And from 2027, the Employment Rights Act will require employers to demonstrate that a request refusal is procedurally correct and objectively reasonable.

This means that blanket policies, vague rationale and assumptions won’t hold up well against scrutiny. Employers will need a strong process, documented evidence, and consistent decision-making.

Avensure clients have a dedicated advisor on hand to guide them through these requests – making sure every decision is fully compliant.

The sun’s out. But is your workplace ready for it? ☀️

With the UK expected to face hotter and more frequent heatwaves, the pressure is growing for stronger workplace protections. And just last week, the Climate Change Committee called for the introduction of a maximum working temperature in the UK as extreme heat becomes a bigger risk for employers and employees alike.

Currently there is no legal maximum temperature to work in the UK. But under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must take reasonable steps to keep working conditions safe and suitable.

This could look like:

🔹 Improving ventilation or airflow

🔹 Providing cold drinking water

🔹 Relaxing dress codes

🔹 Adjusting workloads or break patterns

🔹 Carrying out risk-assessments for heat-related risks

This is especially important for physically demanding roles, outdoor workers or employees who may be more vulnerable to heat.

False.

❌ Almost all of April 2026's changes apply to every employer regardless of size. Whether you have 5 or 150 employees, the rules still apply to you.

The only exceptions are collective redundancy rules, which kick in at 20 or more redundancies, and reporting obligations which are expected to only affect larger businesses (250+) next year.

SSP, unpaid parental leave, paternity leave and whistleblowing protections for sexual harassment disclosures all apply to businesses of every size and industry, with no minimum headcount required.

More changes land in Summer/Autumn this year. If you're unsure whether your business is fully compliant with what's already in force, your Avensure advisor can walk you through it.

☀️ The sun is out and summer's (almost) here – meaning your inbox is probably filling up with holiday requests.

As summer approaches, it’s not unusual to see multiple employees asking for time off. Handle it badly and you risk frustration, inconsistency, and even grievances. But handle it properly and you can protect both your business and your team’s morale.

How to manage the summer rush without the headaches:

✅ Have an established holiday policy

✅ Set a minimum notice requirement

✅ Apply rules consistently

✅ Define minimum staffing levels so you're never caught short

✅ Use a time-saving annual leave system like PeopleCloud

Remember: refusing holiday without proper process, or ignoring requests entirely, can expose you to tribunal claims.

Avensure clients – your dedicated advisor is on hand to help you build a holiday policy that protects your business and keeps your team happy.
