What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for autistic children?

ACT uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies together with commitment and positive behaviour-change strategies which help to increase psychological flexibility in children.

ACT is a 'third wave' behavioural therapy derived from behaviour analysis.

What are the benefits of ACT for autistic children?

Effective strategies to develop your child's speech and language skills are through using your child's natural motivation, their favourite activities and through engaging in joint attention activities. Once you establish motivation use 'carrier phrases' to motivate your child to talk.
What are carrier phrases? Carrier phrases are used to encourage your child to fill-in-the-blank when talking. While saying familiar phrases, leave off the last word and have your child fill-in-the-blank. For example, when you say, "ready, set, go", leave off "go" and have your child say it.
While playing with your child repeat the same phrase several times and then pause and let your child to "request" the activity. For example, when playing 'flying aeroplane' game with your child repeat few times "up and down" and then put your child back to the floor while saying "down" and pause to encourage your child to say "up" and as soon as your child says "up" put your child back up to reinforce their verbal request. Such activities are fun and use natural reinforcers at the same time!
