Four words.

In my time working with leaders helping build DEIB workplace cultures, what are the four words I have to use the most?

Work place culture is a complex entity, comprised of a lot of people, so what are those four words?

A meaningful thank you.

I could have dragged that out but there you are.

When was the last time you gave or received a meaningful thank you?

A proper, eye contact, undivided attention thank you with enough gravitas for you to know it was meant?

You see, it is always about the people for me, you can write guides, policies, work place handbooks, you can have mission statements on the walls, you can have pool tables.

Nothing comes close to a meaningful thank you.

That human moment, that genuine recognition, that real feeling.

Observe the people around you, at work and socially, see how many actually stop and say thank you, with feeling and eye contact.

Everything starts with leaders and leadership.

The first conversation was with a young lady who works as a cleaner for a large clothing retailer.

I asked her if a senior manager walked past her:
1. Would they say hello and
2. Would they know her name?

Her answer was no to both, never happened.

We were sat at a cafe that has an inside seating area and an outside seating area.

Both were served by waiters and waitresses. We were sat in the outside area and we ordered coffees.

The drinks were brought to a table about five feet from where we were sta and the waitress put them on the table and shouted "drinks for " the name of our group who ordered them and he had to get up and get them.

I thought that a bit odd. I thought was really odd that other people had their drinks delivered to their table, but these were the select few.

On way way from there, I pulled into a petrol station for diesel, filled up and went in to pay. I had to wait for the staff to finish their conversation, which took two minutes before I was even acknowledged.

I wasn't even spoken to. As soon as the transaction cleared, she returned to her conversation, she did not speak to me once.

Now some may not even have noticed these behaviours, I do because it tells you how these people were trained, if at all, how their managers behave and there is no focus on improvement.

When you have what they perceive or have been taught to perceive is a captive audience, complacency can creep in to a remarkable level, yet these businesses completely rely on customers choosing to visit.

We all experience this every day, next time you go out and choose to give a business your custom, be aware of the interaction and see how it made you feel.

Condition this, as I have, into a mindset and you will start to see the world from a different perspective.

I am delighted to be working once again with the to document the changes and renovations to their iconic town centre branch building.

The branch is remaining as an integral part of the town and community, the space that used to be offices and meeting rooms is being converted into flats for either rent tenants or to help first time buyers from the town.

The strip out is done so we have photographed the now bare bones of the interior.

At various stages in the refurb, we will again be documenting the progress and , of course, the finished article.

Projects that support the localcommunity fit so well with my values it is a joy to work on projects like this with a company that is so community and client focused.

They are also a winner of a Great Place to Work award and are now also a B-Corp business. So many of our values align, love it!

DEIBA work place culture, employee recognition and CSR photography is a concept new to so many people.

I get this all the time so if you would like to know more about what I do and how it benefits the business and the people on the business, I am more than happy to answer any questions you have.

It is not just the brilliant smile that caught my attention with this photograph, it is the writing on the wall art behind, be iconic.

As a combination this really speaks to me about a great people first culture.

Go and be iconic, be you.

Sometimes the connection isn't with another person, it is with an ideal, a value, a mission and being able to be a part of that, just as you are.

VF Corporation is happy to share their values and culture, to show their people at work, to prove their values.

One of the questions Iasked the associates when I was immersed in the work place was this:

"I have read the web site and all the lovely words and aspirations, what is it really like to work here?"

The answers won't surprise you because a culture genuinely lived can only be genuine.

People answer honestly and quickly when talking to an independent person.

VF Corporation has a great work place culture, you can ask anyone, I did!

People work best when working towards a common goal, understanding their role in the team.

Once again, we turn to look at VF Corporation as a great example of a diverse and inclusive work place.

I immersed myself in their work place to observe and capture the real time interactions between the associates.

Every photo I took was in real time, nothing was staged or posed by me, on a couple of occasions the associates chose to pose in a group, that was their choice and this spoke volumes about the closeness of the teams.

Real time photography in the workplace is not easy at all because things can happen and change very quickly.

Interactions between people tell the best story, meeting to talk through an issue and to find a solution to a problem, or to look for continious improvement, these are the moments that matter.

What I alsoloved in my time working with VF was the affect my presence had. I was asked fifty times a day what are you doing? Why are you here?

When I first started, people were a little wary, hence the questions.

My answer was one that got repeated over and over again.

I am here because of you. Because of the work you do and the good energy you bring. The company want you to know you are valued and important, now and in the future. They want you to feel valued.

When was ther last time someone said that to you?

The impact my answer had on the associates was brilliant, and word soon spread. I answered the question always with the same answer and the associates loved it.

They stopped being wary and were very relaxed when they saw me, their energy was also good, and this really showed in the photos.

I love what I do, I always bring energy with me and when working ith people who also love what they do, the energy is contagious.

Diversity: The varied representation of people within a workforce, including different backgrounds, perspectives, and identities.

Equity: Ensuring fair processes and outcomes for all, recognizing that individuals need different resources to thrive.

Inclusion: Creating a culture where all employees feel respected, supported, and valued for their unique perspectives.

Belonging: The emotional outcome of a strong DEI culture, where employees feel safe to bring their authentic selves to work without needing to fit in.

These are an essential part of our Core Values.

I will add another one, Accessibility. The ability to enter and navigate a building and achieve your objective without assistance. Who ever you are.

VF Corporation have built DEIB into their work place culture, this photo shows people having fun at their Coalville site.

But it never stops, it can always be improved and VF are always looking for improvements, in their processes and for their people.

Actually showing your diversty and inclusivity through photography speaks volumes about your culture, and makes people see that your business is an attractive place to work.
