According to the smart folk at the Boston Consulting Group, ICT accounts for 3-4% of global CO2 emissions – twice as much as civil aviation. The surge in demand for digital networking during the pandemic resulted in telecommunications companies consuming more energy than ever, expanding their carbon footprint as a consequence.

Here at Cogent Content, we’re not in the business of fixing the carbon footprints of Amazon and Google, but we’re putting our own house in order and helping our clients to do likewise. This begins with our email protocols.

In our latest blog, we uncover the dramatic impact of pointless email on the environment and share a few tips for adopting more eco-friendly email habits that could stop the planet screaming – and maybe your email contacts too.

Did you know that a typical email generates the equivalent of 4g of CO2 emissions? This increases dramatically when your message contains images or large attachments.

We send countless emails without considering the energy consumed or the carbon dioxide emitted. Every email requires electricity to process it. Network connections use electricity while the email is being sent and received. As the email navigates the internet, each server uses power to temporarily store it, before passing it on. Hitting ‘Reply All’ makes things worse.

You can take some simple steps to cut out bad email habits. We’ve produced a simple charter that can save time, save energy, save the planet and maybe the sanity of everyone on your email list too. Check out the latest story on our website to find out more.

Last month I was overtaken on a blind bend by a large black Range Rover travelling well over the speed limit - driven by a bloke of course! Thankfully, we both lived to tell the tale, but this hair-raising episode reminded me of one of my late father’s catchphrases:

“What’s the most dangerous component in a car? It’s the nut behind the wheel!”

Aside from the obvious risk to life and limb, bad driving is also bad for the environment. Speeding results in excessive fuel consumption and given that most vehicles on British roads are still powered by fossil fuels, this spells bad news for the planet.

COVID19 lockdowns had a big impact on the volume of road traffic in the UK. Millions of us were forced to work virtually at short notice. The roads were much safer as a result and at first, you might think that this was good news for the planet too. Broadly speaking it was, but there’s always a downside.

Check out our latest blog to find out how bad browsing and email habits can increase your carbon footprint. Download our email charter which can save you time, save energy, help save the planet and maybe your sanity too.

A recent poll of nearly a thousand scientists by the journal Nature revealed that, from now on, three-quarters of respondents want their conferences and meetings to be virtual or include a virtual component.

In addition to the obvious benefit of reduced travel, cost and carbon footprint reduction, virtual meetings are also immediate and personal. When combined, these two factors can help to unlock new opportunities for companies and individuals.

Read our latest blog to discover tips on how to participate in a virtual meeting where everyone feels that you are talking with them one to one - regardless of how many people are on the call.

A recent survey for Bloomberg suggested that four out of ten respondents would consider resigning if their employer put a stop to home working. The thought of surrendering their newly discovered work-life balance is hard to swallow.

There is new evidence to suggest that remote working improves productivity, adding more weight to the case for greater flexibility in the “new world of work”. Virtual meetings are here to stay. We’re just going to have to get better at them.

Lockdown restrictions prompted by the COVID19 emergency forced almost four billion people worldwide to set up a ‘home office’ - with varying degrees of success.

Often this transition was driven, not by what worked best, but simply by what worked at all. Consequently, bad habits and frustration have accumulated in the virtual meeting room. Some people have had enough!

But online meetings are unlikely to be a temporary fix. They’re part of the “new world of work”, and we’re all going to have to get better at them.

In our latest blog, we share some resources and practical tips to help maximise the potential of virtual meetings:
