We're all guilty of possibly doing more than we should at times. Working late to finish a project, answering emails on holiday and checking in on work when we should be sleeping perhaps.
The thing is, by doing this you're making a rod for your own back and setting unrealistic and unsustainable expectations for your clients or customers and the end result can be catastrophic.
You will end up burning yourself out, which will impact your standard of delivery of your product or service, customers will be disappointed when you don't deliver to the expected time frames and you'll lose control over the structure of your business.
So how do you over come this?
Working hours:
You need to set your own working hours, this doesn't need to be 9:5, one of the benefits of being your own boss is the flexibility of deciding your hours. Make sure you communicate your working hours to clients and customers, either on your website or as part of a client 'on-boarding' process. It is then important to try to be as strict as you can with this. Even if you do have a weak moment and check your emails at 3am, a great tip is to schedule it's reply within working hours.
Joint expectations:
Demonstrate your expectations for the service you deliver but also what you expect from your clients. For example, for a design agency - Clients asking for any amendments to design work need to be in writing and within a specifc deadline and in return you will respond with any amends within a specific time frame.
