The most powerful thing you can say in a negotiation is often nothing at all.
We rush to fill silence because it feels uncomfortable, and in that rush we give away our position, our price and our composure. A pause is not a gap to be filled. It is a tool. It signals that you are thinking, not performing, and it invites the other person to reveal more than they meant to.
Silence is not the absence of communication. Used well, it is the loudest thing in the room.
