People get sick.

Security officers aren't machines.

🤒 The real test isn't whether sickness happens. It's what the company does next.

The client shouldn't be ringing around desperately trying to find somebody.

That's the supplier's problem.

A responsible company should know who's available, who understands the site and who can safely cover the duty.

There may occasionally be unavoidable difficulties, especially at short notice, but communication matters.

Silence is unacceptable.

If there's a problem, tell the client early and deal with it.

Tell them the things you'd want to know if you were standing there alone at midnight.

🔑 Who should be allowed in?

Who shouldn't?

Where are the vulnerable areas?

Have there been previous incidents?

Are staff working overnight?

Are contractors expected?

Where are the emergency exits?

Who holds responsibility outside normal working hours?

Small details matter.

Even something as simple as knowing that a delivery regularly arrives at 4am prevents confusion.

Security works much better when the client and supplier actually talk to each other.

🚶 A ten-minute conversation over the telephone rarely tells the whole story.

Something described as "a small industrial site" could have three entrances, poor lighting, valuable equipment outside and a public footpath running beside it.

A site visit allows sensible questions to be asked.

It also lets the client meet the people they may end up dealing with.

Sometimes the visit reveals that fewer security hours are required.

Sometimes it reveals the opposite.

Either way, everybody understands what they're discussing.

Nobody should simply be given an address and told, "Be there for 8pm."

📋 Before the first shift, somebody needs to understand the site.

Where are the entrances?

What areas are restricted?

Who is authorised?

What happens during an emergency?

Where are the keys?

Who should be contacted?

What are the actual duties?

Good site instructions remove guesswork.

An officer walking onto a site completely blind is unfair on the officer and dangerous for the client.

Preparation doesn't need to be complicated.

It simply needs to happen.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗱?

For licensable security work, checking an SIA licence should be basic housekeeping.

🪪 Don't simply assume the company has checked it.

Look at the licence.

Check the photograph.

Check the expiry date.

Check that the licence covers the work they're actually carrying out.

Professional suppliers should already have systems for checking their officers, but clients shouldn't feel uncomfortable asking either.

You're allowing somebody responsibility for your premises, customers, employees or property.

Asking whether they're properly licensed isn't insulting.

It's sensible.

A uniform doesn't automatically make somebody a security professional.

Some of the squad at Egremont Crab fair yesterday keeping things right.

Good craic, busy day and all ended well.

And being the caring bloke I am, I pre warned Will Mellor that his white trainers could easy end up ruined.... they didn't.
