It's Organic September! We’re delighted to announce that Longcliffe has achieved OF&G (Organic Farmers & Growers) approval for a range of our specialist animal feed and agricultural products.

The approval covers the SpHerical range, Ground Calcium Limestone and our Longcal and Superlon Animal Feed Grades. This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to quality, product integrity, and supporting customers across the organic farming sector with trusted, approved mineral feed materials and agricultural products.

The approval provides additional assurance that these products meet the requirements for use within certified organic farming systems, helping farmers and feed manufacturers maintain compliance while benefiting from Longcliffe’s high-quality calcium carbonate solutions.

We look forward to continuing to support the organic agriculture sector with reliable, high-quality products and exceptional service. You can find more information on our approved product ranges by visiting the OF&G website: https://ofgorganic.org/useful-info/approved-suppliers?q=Longcliffe

At the heart of our business is our people. Congratulations to our Development Director Ian McDonald who is celebrating an incredible 47 years with us!

Ian began as an electrical apprentice in July 1979. Once he’d finished his apprenticeship through Chesterfield College of Technology, he moved on to become the site electrician and began mentoring new apprentices. In 1996 he became Quarry Manager for both Brassington Moor and Ryder Point Quarries; and then finally in 2021 he took on his current role.

“I became aware of Longcliffe through helping out at my father’s car body spray shop where he used to paint the company’s small vehicle fleet,” says Ian. “I was a young lad who did not have a vision for the future, but my father rang Longcliffe to see if they had any jobs and, as I lived only five miles away, it was an easy decision to take the apprenticeship here. I haven’t looked back!”

People play a big part in Ian’s life. He credits diversity and the people as the best things about his job and believes “Look after your people and they will look after you."

We're looking forward to supporting this year's Ashbourne Show on Saturday 15th August.

As a long-standing supporter of one of Derbyshire's best-loved agricultural events, we're proud to once again be sponsoring the show. This year is particularly special, with our Chairman, Robert Shields, taking on the role of Show President.

If you're visiting, keep an eye out for our show trailer and banners around the parade ring, and do stop by to say hello.

We look forward to seeing everyone there and wish all exhibitors, competitors and organisers a fantastic day.

Through a partnership with Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London, Longcliffe limestone is playing a role in research that could help decarbonise the global cement industry.

We recently supplied our Superlon L150 calcium carbonate to a research team, where it is being used to explore more energy-efficient cement production and new approaches to capturing carbon dioxide.

The team explains:
“The research in Professor Paul Fennell’s group searches along numerous avenues to decarbonise cement production. Amongst these, they have been investigating methods to reduce the energy used during cement production, and also how to capture the residual CO2 which is produced during cement production. In their work, they have been using Longcliffe Limestone as both the main ingredient in an improved cement process, and as a reversible CO2 capture medium.

The research holds out the promise of reducing cement CO2 emissions by up to 50% without carbon capture (whilst still producing the same type of cement used around the world today), or eliminating them completely when CO2 capture is added (and with significantly lower energy costs than other similar CO2 capture processes).”

We are proud to see a Longcliffe product contributing to important research with the potential to support a more sustainable future for cement production.

Meet two of the newest faces in the Longcliffe logistics team.

Jack Hitch and Matt Freeman are among 13 drivers to have joined us in recent months as we continue to strengthen our transport operation and invest in the service we provide to customers across the UK.

Based at our Curzon Lodge transport depot, our growing team, together with new Volvo FH Aero tractor units and additional tippers, is helping us build even greater flexibility across our industrial powders and aggregates deliveries.

Welcome to Longcliffe, Jack and Matt. We're delighted to have you both on board.

Supporting traditional skills in the Derbyshire countryside.

We recently supplied 18 tonnes of walling stone to the Derbyshire branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association for its annual competition at the Nightingale Centre in Great Hucklow.
The stone was used to rebuild a field boundary wall as competitors, ranging from amateurs to experienced professionals, demonstrated the craftsmanship and precision involved in dry stone walling.

The event formed part of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain Grand Prix series and attracted entrants from across the region. Alongside the stone donation, we also contributed prize funding to help recognise the achievements of the competition winners.

Dry stone walls are an important part of the Peak District landscape, and it is encouraging to see traditional skills being passed on and celebrated through events like this.

Not every prom arrival comes with 500 horsepower.

When it was time for his son's school prom, Night Driver Supervisor Dan Duchnowski swapped the usual family car for one of our HGVs, giving Igi a memorable journey to the big event at Shottle Hall.

It's a great photo and a reminder that behind every vehicle in our fleet is a team of people with lives, families and special moments away from work.

We hope Igi had a fantastic evening and wish him all the best for the future.

Congratulations to Calum Redman on becoming the first person to complete a quarrying apprenticeship with Longcliffe. 👏

Working alongside our quarry team, Calum has gained practical experience across quarry operations while studying through the Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC), developing the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the mineral products industry.
Investing in apprenticeships is an important part of building the workforce of the future, and it's great to see Calum achieve this milestone.
