π‘ WINSTER JOB β FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE OF DAMP! π§π¨
Another interesting one in Winster! This customer had been left scratching their head after having several builders and roofers look at the problem, yet nobody had managed to identify the cause of the damp wall.
I came along, investigated the problem, and within minutes had identified some major issues that needed addressing. π
π¨ First things first: The affected wall was hacked back to expose what was going on beneath the surface.
π The real problem: After investigating further, I found a lack of proper breathability within the ceiling and roof build-up. The wrong roofing felt, combined with excessively thick Rockwool insulation, appeared to be contributing to condensation and moisture build-up. This moisture was then travelling down into the wall, causing the damp problems.
β οΈ But that wasn't the only issue! The original wall was a traditional lime wall that had been badly covered with Browning and Multi-Finish plaster. This is a big no-no on traditional lime construction, as these materials can restrict the wall's natural ability to breathe and release moisture.
𧱠The lesson here: Damp isn't always caused by a leaking roof or failed pointing. Sometimes the real issue lies in the materials used and how the building has been constructed. If you don't identify the root cause, you can spend a fortune treating the symptoms without ever solving the problem.
At B.Bryan Plastering & Rendering Services , I believe in investigating the cause before simply covering it back up. Getting the materials right and understanding how an older property needs to breathe is essential to achieving a lasting result.
