🌟 Five weeks self-employed—and what a journey it has been!

It wasn’t until yesterday, while preparing for my own ISO 9001 quality audit next week, that I realised just how much I have achieved in only five weeks:

✅ Created my own ISO 9001 Quality Management System and supporting documentation, which are already being implemented with clients
✅ Signed up with other consultancy companies as a subcontractor
✅ Joined EMC
✅ Booked my ISO 27001 Lead Auditor transition training for September
✅ Achieved my PCQI certification
✅ Secured ongoing contracts with clients
✅ Completed 50% of my Level 3 teaching course
✅ Learned several new software systems
✅ Become my own IT expert—with a little help from ChatGPT!

Apparently, I am now a marketing queen too! 👑

I have always understood the importance of marketing and have been heavily involved in it throughout my career. However, nobody tells you just how much marketing is involved when you start your own business. Every day, I feel like I have a new idea and then learn its perhaps not the best to keep having these ideas as I have to then create it!

Starting a business takes courage, determination and plenty of problem-solving. Five weeks in, I am incredibly proud of the foundations I have built for AA Compliance Compass, and I am excited to see what comes next.

Here’s to the next five weeks or five years! 🚀

💷 A cashflow forecast should show timing, assumptions and pressure points—not just a final balance.

A business can appear profitable on paper but still struggle to pay its bills if money does not arrive when it is needed.

For start-ups and SMEs, a clear and realistic cashflow forecast can also be an important part of a business plan or an application for grant funding or government-backed finance.

⚠️ Three warning signs your cashflow forecast needs attention:

1. Income is recorded when invoices are raised rather than when payment is realistically expected.

2. Irregular costs—such as VAT, Corporation Tax, insurance renewals or equipment purchases—have not been included.

3. The forecast shows a closing balance but does not explain the assumptions behind sales, costs and payment dates.

✅ One practical next step:

Review the forecast month by month and identify the lowest cash position. Then check which assumptions, costs or delayed payments are creating the greatest pressure.
