The materials you choose can shape far more than the way a building looks.

When planning for his own house project, Director Phil Tuckwell MRICS has thought carefully about where each material comes from, how it will perform and the impact it will have over the lifetime of the building.

That has meant using locally sourced stone from Buxton in Derbyshire, alongside resin-composite cladding and materials incorporating recycled content wherever possible.

It’s a thoughtful balance between creating a home that sits naturally within its surroundings, delivers the right architectural finish and makes responsible, sustainable use of modern materials.

Even when you know the process inside out, it feels very different when it is your own project.

Our Director Phil has spent years guiding clients through planning, design and construction. But taking on his own build has given him a fresh appreciation for just how emotional the journey can be.

From securing permission for a new farm track, to exploring Class Q as a fallback and eventually progressing to full planning, Phil describes the experience as an emotional rollercoaster.

Speaking with Associate Architect Samantha and Associate Interior Designer Anna, he reflects on what the project has taught him, particularly the importance of keeping clients informed, reassured and involved throughout every stage of a build.

Because good project management is not just about getting the technical details right. It is also about understanding what the client is going through.
