When people think about branding they often think about businesses. But branding is just for business.

It’s for any organisation, community group, charity or trust that wants to bring people together around a shared purpose.

A strong visual identity creates recognition, builds trust and gives people something to rally behind. It helps communicate who you are, what you stand for and where you’re heading.

This project wasn’t about creating a brand for a church building. It was about creating a unifying identity for a community led charity working towards securing the future of an iconic part of Portnahaven’s heritage.

I created a full logo suite, colour palette, icons and typeface system that can support fundraising, community events, social media, future partnerships and most importantly help the community feel part of something bigger.

Urbanist font was chosen for its approachable, contemporary feel and strong readability.

A dynamic logo suite has been developed to support the organisation across multiple touchpoints.

Horizontal, stacked and standalone brand mark versions of the logo.

The brand mark combines the cross, the letter F for friends and P for Portnahaven into a single symbol.

The logo is only ever an outcome but the value is the thinking and strategy behind it.

If you are looking for a brand built with this strategy, purpose and understanding, I would love to hear from you.

Brand identity reveal for Cearcan.

A consultancy that advises on feed milling and animal nutrition, primarily poultry. The founder has over 20 years experience in her field, so we wanted her branding to reflect that experience and her core values of integrity, education, knowledge, partnership, support and sustainability.

She has worked extensively in Africa so it was her connection to this part of the world that inspired the brand colour palette.

The name Cearcan ( Gaelic for Hens or chicken) worked beautifully as a standalone word mark and I created a unique brand mark to capture the sense of partnership and her full circle approach to consultancy.

If you don’t ask you don’t get, right?

I’ve worked with artists, architects, knitwear designers, weavers and copywriters. I find these industries fascinating and completely relatable. Here a few more creatives I’d love to work with this year…

A photographer
A jeweller
A Florist
A potter
An interior designer
A Childrenswear brand

A share so many of these interests, I think we’d be the perfect match!

A recent Squarespace website redesign and refresh for Women in Agriculture Scotland.
One of the biggest pieces of feedback from the committee was that the old website no longer reflected the organisation they were becoming.

The previous WordPress website felt quite corporate, a little masculine and difficult to update behind the scenes. Not ideal for a community built around connection, support and accessibility.

This Squarespace web design project wasn’t just about giving the site a visual refresh. It was about creating a website that felt lighter, brighter and easier to use for both the committee and its members.

From a design point of view, I softened the overall feel of the website by introducing lighter tints from the existing brand palette and rounding elements like buttons and containers to create a more welcoming user experience. There’s actually some really interesting psychology behind rounded buttons and why they feel more approachable… but that’s probably another post.

Moving the organisation from WordPress to Squarespace also means the committee can now manage updates themselves far more easily without fighting with a complicated backend.

Alongside the Squarespace website redesign, we also introduced a new mentoring portal where members can apply for mentoring opportunities and log into a members-only area to view mentor profiles and resources.
A more approachable brand experience.
A more user-friendly Squarespace website.
And a platform designed to support the future growth of Women in Agriculture Scotland.

New branding reveal for the exceptionally talented designer, creative mender and humble powerhouse that is Flora,

I first met Flora just after I graduated and we worked together on a variety of freelance projects, including some incredible crochet catwalk pieces for Christopher Kane. She blew me away with her skills, she can literally turn her hand to anything.

So when Flora won my competition to win a free logo, I was initially surprised, she’s built an incredible business over the last 10years and has a following of over 200k. She’s smashing it, but recognised she never really had a brand identity in place.

So what began as a free logo actually turned into a project to bring a cohesive identity to unify all parts of her business.

The starting point for the new logo suite was
the darning needle itself, used as a structural
element rather than a literal illustration. From
this, the wider logo system evolved, with subtle
twists in the letterforms referencing the eye of
a darning needle.

I also created her very own alphabet, small twists inspired by the darning needle have been woven into individual letterforms.

Colour plays a huge role in Floras work, more colour=more joy, the brand palette celebrates the idea that sustainable fashion isn’t always beige but can be joyful, expressive and full of colour.

Well done if you’ve read this far!

As always I’d love to hear your feedback in the comments below. Have a happy weekend

It’s Monday morning, obviously I’m writing my to do list for the week. But today I’m also going to write a “stop-doing” list.

I’m reading Good to Great” by Jim Collins which talks about cutting out distractions and only focusing on tasks that align with your Hedgehog Concept ( that’s a whole other post!)

Instagram after 9pm is first on the stop doing list for me!

Whats one thing you could stop doing this week that would make space for something better?

Hello
I’m back.

I’m super busy right now but I’ve still made time for this.

Today I introduced the primary 6 kids at our local school to the world or branding. We’ve set them a brief to design a logo, packaging and marketing poster or social media advert for a new chocolate bar or sweetie that the world has never experienced before.

Why? Because I wish I had this when I was at school. I wish I’d know that being “arty” isn’t confined to a hobby but that drawing, making, and thinking creatively to solve problems is a set of unique skills that people hire you for!

I thought it was only fair that I took part too. So here’s my logo for my new product called Zonk.

Can you guess what it is and what it does, let me know below 👇🏻

I’d love to see more transparency around the environmental impacts of chat GPT so we can all make more informed decisions about what we use it for and how often we use it.

We probably think more about the cost of sticking the tumble drier on (thanks to our smart meters) than using chat GPT as a search engine.

Imagine if we could see the same impact or our choices with Ai.

I’m not saying don’t use it I just think we need transparency to make informed decisions of when best to use it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts???

This post was inspired by a business I follow on instagram that is constantly changing their branding.

There is so much creative inspiration around that’s it’s easy to lose confidence or be tempted to try something shiny and new.

But every time you change how you show up you’re asking your audience to relearn who you are, that’s exhausting for you and them.

My advice, go back to the basics, ask yourself
• what you do
• who is it for
• how do I help them
• what makes me different.

Define your lane and commit to it and then stay in it long enough to actually measure the results.

This is how I start all my rebrand projects, with strategy and clarity.

Thinking of changing lanes, book a brainstorm call and we can audit where you are now and where you want to go next.
