A quick little job 😂, for The Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton.
Complete repair, strip and repainting and signwriting of their replica historic signboard for the Upper Beeding Toll house,
Originally made in the 1980,s, for the museum, I’ve already repainted it once around 2005, so it was a treat to have a second go at this monster !
The Douglas fir planks are in great condition but had shrunk and become loose on the frame, so strips of timber were cut and glued in the gaps, and the whole thing clamped up tight overnight, before being sanded smooth and then given 8 coats of coach
enamel paint.
Then the fun part begins, hours and hours and hours of signwriting , in the original copied style of the Northchapel toll signboard, from where this replica took its pattern, complete with all the weird ( to modern eyes) letter shapes, spelling and language.
The whole thing reads like a legal act of parliament, and shows a gentler, slower pace of life, where nothing went quicker than the galloping horse.
Great fun to do, and well worth a visit to the museum to see how it all worked !
