As one of the UK’s largest fire and rescue services, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is taking proactive steps to prepare its fleet and technicians for the transition to low and zero-emission vehicles.

Through a partnership with Autotech Training, eight ECFRS technicians completed specialist programmes including IMI Level 3 Hybrid & Electric Vehicle training and Advanced Auto Electrical courses delivered on-site at their facilities.

The result?

- Stronger in-house capability to maintain emerging vehicle technologies
- Increased readiness for hybrid and electric fleet integration
- A future-focused approach to meeting the UK’s 2035 zero-emission targets

As fleet technology evolves, investing in people and skills is just as important as investing in vehicles.

A new article from Automotive Management (AM) highlights a growing challenge facing the automotive aftermarket: technician skills in EV repair.

With only 26% of UK technicians currently qualified to work on electric vehicles, the skills gap is becoming impossible to ignore.

But this is no longer just an industry-wide concern - it’s starting to have real business implications.
At Autotech Training, we were recently contacted by a garage that had been refused insurance because they didn’t have an EV-trained technician on site.

This reflects a shift in how EV training is viewed:

🔹 It’s not just about future-proofing
🔹 It’s not just about creating new revenue streams
🔹 It’s becoming essential for operating safely and remaining insurable

As highlighted by the ABI at the SMMT Electrified Summit, the industry must ensure technicians are “fit for the vehicles of today and tomorrow.”
From a legal and insurance perspective, it comes down to competence and risk. High-voltage systems require the right knowledge and training, and insurers are increasingly taking this into account.

The message is clear:
EV training is moving from optional to essential.

Garages that act now won’t just be prepared for the future, they’ll be protected in the present.
