Institute of Translation and Interpreting

Institute of Translation and Interpreting We are now one of the primary sources of information on these services to government, industry, the media and the general public.

The Institute of Translation & Interpreting was founded in 1986 as the only independent professional association of practising translators and interpreters in the United Kingdom With its aim of promoting the highest standards in the profession, ITI serves as a meeting place for all those who understand the importance of translation and interpreting to the economy and society, particularly with the

expansion of a single European market of over forty languages and the growth of worldwide communications. ITI offers guidance to those entering the profession and advice not only to those who offer language services but also to their customers.

“The greatest sin is to do nothing because you can only do a little.” (Edmund Burke).

COP28 concludes tomorrow with big decisions in the hands of global leaders, and sometimes as individuals we can feel powerless. But there are things we can all do and our actions matter.

With this in mind, in January we are hosting an expert panel with members of the ITI SHEA Network (Sustainability, Horticulture, Environment and Agriculture). They will be discussing ways in which translators and interpreters are engaging with the issues surrounding climate change and sustainability and how you can play your part, as well as offering insights into how you can specialise in these sectors.

🤝The importance of networking
👩Why you don’t have to have an MA in translation
⚙How good equipment is worth the investment
😺Why learning the advanced features of your CAT tool is time well spent

Just because you’re at home in your office, it doesn’t mean you can’t build up a big online network. In a recent YouTube interview, I mentioned how I started out by thinking that other translators wouldn’t want to get to know me because they'd see me as a competitor for translation jobs. Tha...

Why does language inclusion matter?

It's not just about words; it's about breaking down barriers to equality. When people are excluded based on their language, it reinforces disparities in society, and disproportionately affects vulnerable groups such as those at risk of poverty, women, people with disabilities, minorities, and more.

In our digitally evolving world, the digital language divide poses a threat to universal access and inclusion for all. Clear Global / Translators without Borders have launched their end-of-year fundraising campaign to help end language exclusion for 4 billion people.

If you would like to donate, or help to spread the word, go to https://hubs.ly/Q02bnpSr0 and ensure that no one is left behind.

LAST CHANCE TO BOOK
In a world where there is mounting pressure on rates, developing the skills to become a specialist is an effective way to buck the trend.

In this two-part course you will learn the principles of technical translation and find out how to develop the skills necessary to succeed in becoming a fully-fledged technical translator, with stability and better rates as your reward.

Here’s what one previous participant thought:
“An excellent course which I would thoroughly recommend. It covers a lot of ground from glossary creation and translation issues to practical advice on finding work which David Smith presents in a very down to earth style, drawing on his wealth of experience.” Caroline Cronin.
