His final logbook entry was made on the day he died.

This poignant Second World War RAF group belonged to Warrant Officer L. R. Blackwell, whose wartime flying career saw him complete extensive sorties over North Africa and during the invasion of Sicily, before later serving as a flight instructor.

Across his pilot’s logbooks, dating from 1941 to 1945, are more than 3,000 hours in the air.

The final entry is dated 29 July 1945, the day Warrant Officer Blackwell was killed on active service in what is now Tanzania.

Alongside the logbooks is his full medal entitlement, sent posthumously to his mother, including the Africa Star with North Africa 1942–43 clasp, Air Crew Europe Star and 1939–1945 Star.

More than eighty years later, the medals tell us where he served.

The logbooks tell us about the man who served.

A puzzle of fidelity, made to commemorate love.

This fascinating fede gimmel ring draws on two centuries old traditions.

“Mani in fede”, meaning hands clasped in trust, can be traced back as far as Ancient Rome, while gimmel or puzzle rings became particularly popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. Their interlocking parts were often associated with betrothal and marriage.

This particular example commemorates a French wedding. Although one little hand has sadly lost its thumb over the years, the real treasure is hidden inside.

When the ring is opened, the inner surfaces reveal a beautifully personal inscription:

“L. S. Enout M. C. Irma Guyot Uni Le 1' Aout 1838”

United on 1 August 1838.

Nearly two centuries later, their wedding ring is still telling their story.

Hanson Ross’s catch of the day…

We do see some wonderfully unusual things come through our doors!

This fabulous late 19th or early 20th century silver articulated fish is actually a spice or trinket box.

And yes, he wiggles!

Made in individually articulated sections, he’s a lovely example of the craftsmanship that can turn something practical into something rather extraordinary.

Certainly more interesting than your average trinket box.

Coming up in our September auction.

What’s the most unusual piece of silver you have tucked away at home?

Forget me not…

There’s something particularly lovely about the decoration on this early 20th century ladies’ pocket watch.

The tiny blue forget me nots weren’t chosen simply because they were pretty. For centuries, the flowers have symbolised remembrance, enduring love and the idea of keeping someone close even when they’re apart.

Which makes them rather poignant on a watch that would once have been carried close to its owner.

We may never know who gave it to her, or who she was being asked not to forget, but more than a century later, that little message remains.

Coming up in our September auction with an estimate of £200 to £300.

Sometimes with antique jewellery, there’s rather more to value than simply what it’s made from.

A little Lady Liberty…

Hidden on the back of this pretty Swiss 14ct gold pendant watch is this wonderful depiction of Lady Liberty, surrounded by beautifully engraved decoration.

It’s one of those pieces that makes you wonder who originally owned it, where she wore it and what stories it could tell.

Coming up in our 19th September auction, with an estimate of just £80 to £120.

Proof that you don’t need a huge budget to find something rather special at auction.
