Rootle and Sprout: No dig, low maintenance, healthy & edible gardens. Edible gardening for real life: plants & ideas, produce and ramblings... Permaculture & Forest gardening principles used to make beautiful edible spaces

Unusual, perennial and edible or useful plants are my passion. I sell the plants I grow, as well as produce and some of the things I make from them: botanical syrups, drinks and teas. A lifelong love of gardening, growing & foraging; a creative mind & a love of eating 'straight off the tree' have all led Beca Beeby to spread the joy of an edible garden to others. Since discovering permaculture & f

orest gardening, Beca has broken free of 'traditional' gardening methods and experimented with new techniques for growing. Her young family reap the benefits of their edible garden at home, whist she designs & builds larger gardens for others to enjoy. Using methods that build a healthy soil structure & provide space for beneficial wildlife, Beca has embraced the permaculture aims of reducing labour input & increasing produce; no-dig beds, regular mulching, choosing the right plants are all important parts of this. Helping people grow food without turning their garden into an allotment, and to try new crops.

Tree spinach: a brilliant plant, eat the leaves raw or cooked but always leave a few to go to seed : you'll never need to plant it again & will have a recurring source of 'spinach' with next to no input! It's also got magic pink sparkly 'fairy glitter' so great for any reluctant leaf-eaters (sadly it disappears when cooked).

One of my cherry trees got aphids badly this year.... I left them to it and it's been pretty interesting - not.only did I see bumble and honeybees harvesting the honeydew from them, but I now have ladybird larvae (pictured) & pupae coming out of my ears!

I am incredibly lucky - I get to work at some beautiful places: yesterday I was planting up some squash at Old Lands and spent half the time removing these beautiful butterflies (either Gatekeeper or Meadow Brown as far as I can tell)-I must have moved at least 30! This little feller wouldn't leave my hand so I went on search of some flowers for him, I held him to a salvia and he unrolled his proboscis then pulled back, I then tried some sweet rocket (Hesperis matronalis) & he practically plunged his face in like a drowning man!
