What a long and fascinating history this Grade II listed building has and I'm so happy to be working with a great client team and Salford Council to secure its future so it can once again stand proudly in Eccles. Having undergone severe fire damage, Monks Hall needs to be carefully assessed both physically and from a conservation point of view to understand how it could be repaired and used in the future.
There isn't a lot of guidance out there on how to repair fire damaged buildings and each case is very much unique, but there have been some large, complex buildings that have suffered catastrophic fires over the years and there is research out there. I'm sure the approach we take for Monks Hall will be challenged as everyone has different but valuable views, but as always there are lots of factors at play and we need to balance the preservation of the heritage asset with other social, environmental and economic benefits.
Monks Hall has been vacant for the last 22 years and has been the subject of vandalism and another fire, so the best future use for this building is something where it is fully used so it has the best possible chance of being maintained. I hope to bring you another update soon.
