With the UK currently experiencing a heatwave, it is an appropriate time to consider the additional risks that high temperatures introduce to outdoor and working at heights.
Signage operatives regularly work in demanding environments, including scaffolding, rooftops, highways, construction sites, and busy public areas. These environments already require robust planning and control measures, and hot weather adds a further layer of risk that should not be underestimated.
In elevated temperatures, factors such as direct sunlight, reflected heat from surrounding surfaces, and the insulating effect of PPE can quickly lead to dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related illness. When combined with working at height or operating equipment, these conditions can reduce concentration and increase the likelihood of incidents.
In practical terms, managing these risks on site should include:
Planning work to avoid the hottest parts of the day where possible.
☀️ Building in regular breaks and access to shaded areas.
☀️ Encouraging consistent hydration throughout the working day.
☀️ Ensuring clothing and sun protection are suitable for conditions.
☀️ Keeping a close eye on early signs of heat stress or fatigue within the team.
☀️ Being aware that individuals will respond differently to heat exposure.
Much of our work is carried out in live, uncontrolled environments, where conditions can change quickly.
Maintaining safe working practices in hot weather relies on good planning, communication, and the ability to adjust activity as conditions evolve.
As temperatures remain high, it is worth taking a moment to review site arrangements and ensure teams are supported to work safely and effectively.
