🌊 A LITTLE SEA AIR FOR THE AUCTION ROOM… 🌊
This atmospheric marine painting is coming up in our October Auction at The Auction Room | Hansons Newark.

By Andreas Riis Carstensen (1844–1906), the Danish artist captures a wonderfully windswept seascape, with sailing vessels making their way across choppy waters beneath a broad, muted sky.

Painted in oil on canvas, the work is signed and framed, and also bears an artist’s plaque to the gilt frame. Carstensen was known for marine subjects, and this is a lovely example of the sort of 19th-century seascape that still works beautifully in a traditional or more contemporary interior.

🎣 NOW THIS IS A CATCH…

Coming up in our October Auction at The Auction Room | Hansons Newark is this wonderfully evocative piece of angling history: a cased taxidermy perch weighing an impressive 21lb 3oz, caught at Low Dunsforth on 28th August 1927.

Presented in a traditional bow-fronted case with a naturalistic riverbank setting, it is exactly the sort of piece that instantly transports you back to the golden age of sporting displays, fishing lodges and country-house collections.

The handwritten details preserved within the case give it that extra layer of charm and provenance, recording both the remarkable weight and the date of the catch.

✨ A BEAUTIFUL 19TH-CENTURY BUDDHA ✨

One of the more striking pieces in our forthcoming October Auction at The Auction Room | Hansons Newark is this 19th-century Newar Valley bronze seated Buddha.

Standing 19cm high, the figure is richly detailed, with an ornate robe, serene expression and a wonderfully aged bronze patina. The Newar craftsmen of the Kathmandu Valley were renowned for their exceptional metalwork, particularly Buddhist sculpture, and pieces such as this are admired for both their spiritual symbolism and fine decorative detail.

This example is described as unconsecrated, meaning it was not ritually blessed for religious use, but it remains a fascinating and highly decorative work in its own right.

🐭 SPOT THE MOUSE… 🐭

A lovely example of one of the most recognisable names in 20th-century British furniture and woodcraft is coming up in our October Auction at The Auction Room | Hansons Newark.

Lot 410 is a Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson of Kilburn oak fruit bowl, complete with the charming carved mouse signature for which the Yorkshire workshop became famous.

Robert Thompson established his workshop in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, and the little carved mouse became his trademark, appearing discreetly on furniture and smaller pieces made by the firm. Today, Mouseman pieces remain highly collectable, admired for their craftsmanship, distinctive adzed surfaces and wonderful Arts & Crafts character.

This oak fruit bowl is a particularly appealing, usable piece, and of course part of the fun is always finding that little mouse.

🌿 ART NOUVEAU BEAUTY IN GOLD & PEARLS 🌿
Delicate, feminine and full of period charm, this Art Nouveau 9ct gold and seed pearl brooch is coming up in our October Auction at The Auction Room | Hansons Newark.

The flowing, sinuous lines are so typical of the Art Nouveau period, when jewellery designers took inspiration from nature, flowers and organic forms. The tiny seed pearls add a lovely softness to the design and give the piece that wonderfully romantic, turn-of-the-century feel. Weighing approximately 3.2g.

✨ SCANDINAVIAN STYLE AT ITS BEST ✨
There is something wonderfully timeless about Georg Jensen jewellery, and this beautiful silver bracelet is a perfect example.

Designed by Danish jeweller Regitze Overgaard, the No. 452 ‘Infinity’ bracelet takes its inspiration from the flowing form of the infinity symbol. Its sculptural, interlocking links give it that unmistakable Scandinavian combination of simplicity, movement and elegant design. The Infinity collection was created for Georg Jensen’s centenary in 2004, looking both back to the company’s heritage and forward to contemporary design.

Presented in its original Georg Jensen box, the bracelet measures approximately 19cm and bears the impressed maker’s marks. It is a lovely piece not only for collectors of Georg Jensen, but for anyone who appreciates beautifully made modern silver jewellery.
