⚠ We’ve been made aware of a Facebook recovery code scam ⚠
A recovery code scam starts with a scammer contacting the victim with a phishing email or message - this message will often appear to come from a trusted source, such as a Facebook friend.
The message will say that they need help accessing their account and that you will receive a code that you then need to forward to them. You may also be sent a link to enter your Facebook login credentials.
The scam results in your account being taken over by an unauthorised user as the recovery code is actually linked to your account.
There are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself and your accounts from these scams:
✅ check the sender’s details - if it looks like a message has come from a friend’s account, contact them via text to check
✅ set up 2-factor authentication (2FA) on your account
✅ make sure your passwords are strong, unique and updated regularly - use three random words and keep your passwords safe with a password manager
❌ never share recovery codes – if anyone requests one code from you it is a red flag
❌ don’t click on any unexpected links, even if they look legitimate - use your app or browser to access the official site.
